My dog gets annoyed by other dogs sniffing his privates at the park.

Dogs will often sniff each other's rears in an attempt to gain valuable (to them) information about each other. Your dog may be doing this to you out of curiosity of what you're like! If he is being too rude it is best to simply get up and stop giving him attention. He'll quickly learn the behavior doesn't get him anywhere, while sitting nicely or performing other behaviors gets him attention!

Most dogs do not like to be petted under their belly or groin - this is a vulnerable place which is instinctively protected by a natural reflex. I would be concerned he is licking because the tip is constantly exposed and irritated - a full vet check to assess for underlying injury or complications is recommended and surgical repair may be necessary to prevent further self trauma and injury. I recommend you take a fresh urine sample with you to rule out UTI also

However, excessive licking in this area can also be a sign of urinary tract infection, prepucial infection, inflammation or allergies. Even neutered dogs can have their penis come out from time to time. If it stays out for an extended period of time or the dog cannot get it back into the prepuce this can be an emergency medical condition. If Leo continues to exhibit these behaviors it may be a good idea to have a veterinarian check him out to ensure there are no issue. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck to you and Leo!

Sometimes pets will do this behavior if there is an irritant around the penile sheath or if the pet has a urinary tract infection that is causing irritation. If he is also urinating and drinking more than normal then you should get Tommy's urine sample check by your vet for a possible UTI. However, if there is no increased urination or drinking and the penis is relatively normal in appearance, iIt is often helpful to soak the pet in a warm Epsom Salt bath to cleanse the area, or you can use a turkey baster to cleanse the penis and sheath thoroughly to help remove any irritants that may be stuck there. If there is no improvement with Tommy within 24-48 hrs or if this is progressively getting worse, then I highly recommend having a vet take a look at this area to ensure no other treatments are needed.

Causes of licking the prepuce/penis area could be a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, or trauma to the area. It is important that you make an appointment to have Mako seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice him straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and he should be seen by a vet immediately. I recommend you put an e-collar (cone) on him to help prevent him from biting/licking at the area as this may help reduce the risk of infection

Hello and thank you for your questions about Jonesy. It's difficult to know if this is normal or not without being able to examine him. Some dogs do have a protrusion above the urethral opening on their penis and it's often lighter colored than the rest of the tissue. This is normal. However, if you are noticing him licking more than normal, this often indicates discomfort. Young male dogs, especially if they are not neutered, often get infections in the prepuce and this can cause excessive licking and often an increase in discharge. Male dogs can also get bladder infections which can also cause increased licking. Since Jonesy cannot talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to have him examined this week. I think dogs tend to focus on this area because there are a lot of strong smells around and it may help dogs identify different people. It is not particularly polite behavior and Stela were my dog I would probably discourage her from doing this - try having the new person ask Stela to sit and offer her a treat to distract her.
