Why does my dog keep sniffing my other dog's butt? Is it a problem?

Dogs will often sniff each other's rears in an attempt to gain valuable (to them) information about each other. Your dog may be doing this to you out of curiosity of what you're like! If he is being too rude it is best to simply get up and stop giving him attention. He'll quickly learn the behavior doesn't get him anywhere, while sitting nicely or performing other behaviors gets him attention!

It's possible that Lulu may have urinary tract infection or some other medical condition that is changing the odor of her urine and making it more interesting to your other dogs. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a urinalysis to check for any problems and get her started on antibiotics or other medication if needed.

When you say scooting I am assuming you mean scooting his rear end on the floor? This is a sign that his bottom is itchy or otherwise bothering him. It's normal for dogs to want to sniff each other's butts - this is how they say hello, and they get a lot of information about each other from scents in this area. Humping is a common play behavior in puppies, and is also very normal. If Snowball seems to be doing excessively, you can gently redirect him to some other activity when he begins doing it. Otherwise, Brownie will probably let him know if he's bothered by it.

I think dogs tend to focus on this area because there are a lot of strong smells around and it may help dogs identify different people. It is not particularly polite behavior and Stela were my dog I would probably discourage her from doing this - try having the new person ask Stela to sit and offer her a treat to distract her.
