Why does my spayed female dog lick a neutered male dog's privates?

Most dogs are interested in smelling other dogs' urine - intact males are often especially interested, even if the other dog is spayed or neutered. They get lots of information about other dogs from sniffing their urine, so it's very normal social behavior for them - even if we find it a bit gross :)

It is not sexual, but it is behavioral. This is how they are establishing which will be the dominant, leader of the pack, dog. You do not have to stop some things but I would keep a close watch on the growling and make sure it does not progress to biting or attacking. From there it the behaviors will likely improve as they adjust more

Hello. He is just being a male dog. Even after neutering, some males may still try to mount females, but in his case, he is still strongly attracted to your spayed female. If you do not plan on neutering the male, keep an eye on the male as the female can get annoyed at him & you may have a fight on your hands. If your male is still quite young, he may mature out of this behavior as his instincts are very strong right now. Just keep an eye on him. However, excessive licking in this area can also be a sign of urinary tract infection, prepucial infection, inflammation or allergies. Even neutered dogs can have their penis come out from time to time. If it stays out for an extended period of time or the dog cannot get it back into the prepuce this can be an emergency medical condition. It's possible that Lulu may have urinary tract infection or some other medical condition that is changing the odor of her urine and making it more interesting to your other dogs. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do a urinalysis to check for any problems and get her started on antibiotics or other medication if needed.

It may be that she has a urinary infection changing her smell that has caused this behavior. I recommend a urinalysis just to be sure. Otherwise this can be a way to show dominance over her if some of the household dynamics have changed. I generally do not think of humping as a medical problem for the male dog, more as a reaction to something new in his environment. I’m wondering if the other dogs are intact (not spayed/neutered) as well and if some of this licking is related to hormones. Licking can also be a sign of submission. If the other dogs don’t seem bothered I’d let them sort it out themselves. If the other dogs snap and you’re worried about a fight I think unfortunately the only thing to do is to monitor them closely and continue to call and distract Pickles as you’ve been doing.
