Why is my 8-week-old chihuahua scooting on the floor? Is it normal?

I think it would be ok to wait as long as the scooting is not too frequent (causing discomfort) and if no other signs of illness are noted such as discharge from the anal sac region, lethargy, anorexia, signs of pain and/or nausea. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

The most common dogs scoot on the floor or grass is because there anal glands , small lubricating glands next to the rectum, are full. You should take your dog to a veterinarian. He or she will check the glands and possibly express them. You vet may also recommend a stool exam to look for parasites, tapeworm in particular. Hugo could have some anal gland discomfort or back or neck pain causing him to cry out. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian- they can check his anal glands and look for a source of pain. They might recommend some tests or starting some pain medication.

However, if this does not improve, have Peanut evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment as anal sac expression may be indicated as this may be due to anal sac impaction or infection. Poor Zippy. He may be scooting because of intestinal parasites (i.e. Tapeworms) or full anal glands (sacks inside the rectum that can fill and cause irritation). Have his stool (feces) checked by your vet for microscopic parasites (invisible to the naked eye) and also the anal glands checked to make sure they aren't full. Both of these should be able to be resolved fairly easy with a vet visit.
