My dog keeps sneezing and coughing, but Zyrtec isn't helping. Why?

I'd recommend having Gigi examined by a vet - this sounds like extreme sneezing. There might be a foreign object stuck in her nose. If she has also had nasal discharge then an infection, growth, or even a tooth root abscess could be causing the sneezing.

Poor guy. It sounds like at the very least Ziggy has an upper airway infection. I would recommend taking him to your vet to get him examined today if possible. If he does have an infection, then a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet generally is enough to resolve the issue. This could be allergy related. You can give 1/2 tablet of adult 25mg Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. If the coughing becomes more persistent or doesn't improve I would contact your vet for an exam to ensure her heart sounds okay. I hope this helps!

Aww, Nikko is such a cutie! I’m sorry he’s having some sneezing fits lately. Allergies or infections like kennel cough can set them off. So can being near cigarette or marijuana smoke, incense, candles, or having something small (blade of grass/bug) stuck up the nostril. There is not much you can do at home. If it’s non-stop, or happening frequently for more than 24 hours, see your vet to he’ll narrow down the causes and get recommendations for treatment. Best of luck to you and Nikko!

Citirizine is an antihistamine that can be helpful if a dog has some allergies or even mild airway irritation. If Shero is coughing so much that he is bringing up phlegm and mucus I would start to worry about a respiratory infection that may need treatment with antibiotics. In these little tiny puppies I tend to treat more aggressively since their immune systems are not fully mature and they can't always fight off infections or other illnesses. I also worry that little sick dogs and cats can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) if they are not able to keep down their food. This can happen if a puppy is coughing and regurgitates his stomach contents a few too many times. I would get Shero back to a veterinarian since his signs are worsening. They may recommend bloodwork and possibly chest radiographs. I hope this helps!
