My dog coughs, gags, and snorts every morning. What's wrong?

Allergies are a possibility along with the start of a respiratory infection. You can give Benadryl to dogs and at his weight it would be closer to a whole 25 mg tablet instead of a 1/4. I would say get him checked if the symptoms continue or you notice them progress

Poor Maui. This sounds a lot like an upper respiratory infection. It usually sounds more like they are choking than a true cough. You can try some Benadryl to see if there is an allergy component to it. See link below. Since it has been going on for 2 weeks and she is only 7 months old, I would have your vet take a look at her. She may need some antibiotics. I this is a URI and it's left untreated, it could turn into pneumonia which is much more difficult to treat. Unfortunately without seeing him in person, I can't say what is going on, so therefore cannot suggest what to give him. There could be a couple of things causing this problem, such as heart disease, allergies, or a respiratory infection, all of which have different treatments. You need to have him seen by a vet to diagnose what is causing this so he can be treated correctly. Best of luck.

If Princess is eating, playing, isn't lethargic and isn't vomiting you can continue the benadryl since it helps. If the cough is still present monday I would have her examined by your Vet. Possible causes are: Kennel cough, heartworm disease, collapsing trachea, heart disease, allergies, or other infections. I hope this helps and I wish Princess the very best!

While she could be experiencing seasonal allergies, an upper respiratory tract infection is more likely given the congestion and nasal discharge. I suspect she will need antibiotic therapy to start. I am glad that you have already determined that it is not related to her heart disease as that is always the concern. If her symptoms do not improve with antibiotics or her condition worsens, then x-rays of her chest will be needed. It is characterized by a hacking gagging cough that may produce a white foamy material. If this is the case, he will likely need an antibiotic. Poor Roxey. The changing of seasons can certainly cause these guys to get some congestion. Unfortunately since Roxey is older, I would take her to your vet for an exam. She could have a simple upper respiratory infection or something more serious like the canine flu, heart disease, or even pneumonia. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs. Your vet can also do blood work or chest X-rays if needed and provide the proper medicine to help make her feel better. Unfortunately there isn’t a good OTC medicine to help her feel better. You can try 75 mg (3 adult tablets) of Benadryl twice a day until you can get her to the vet. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better really soon.
