My dog is very sleepy and won't walk after a vet pain shot. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My dog started throwing up at around 2:30 today and didn't stop for an hour so I took her to the vet. Well they gave her a pain shot and a nausea shot. Along with that they gave me some nausea medicine but she doesn't start those until tomorrow. She has been sleeping since 4 am pass out won't even walk and is still like this and it is almost 10 pm. Is it normal for her to react to the pain shot like that or should it have wore off by now I am very nervous and worried.

I believe you made an additional post about your dog stating that she woke up, moved around, and went back to sleep. That's a good sign. I answered that question, and it I said that depending on the medications she was given, this lethargy could be a side effect of them. Without knowing exactly what medications she was given, I can't say when the pain relief would wear off. I would monitor her for now, and if she's still like this in the morning, I would take her into the vet for an exam.
