Is it normal for my dog to be very sleepy after pyometra surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 13 lbs

Hi my dog had pyometra then had surgery for it then had stump pyometra and had surgery for that to all within 2 weeks she is now 60 hours post op and still really really sleepy is that normal?

Hi, sorry to hear about Daisy's troubles! Pyometra surgery in most cases is relatively uncomplicated. She should be on pain medication and antibiotics that your vet would have provided. many pain medications for dogs can make them sleepy. 60 hours post of she should be starting to feel back to herself within another day. If she is still lethargic and is having any problems like not eating diarrhea, a fever or acting dull, she should be rechecked by your vet. If she is not having any of these, she may just have hard a tough time with anesthesia. I would say by day 3 or 4 if she is not back to herself, call you vet and ask if it could be related to any medication she was sent home with. If she is on pain medication, you may also want to try to cut the dose in half to see if that helps. Good luck, wishing Daisy a speedy recovery!

Poor Layla! While it's normal for a dog to be more lethargic than usual, vomiting usually is not. But it could also be any medications she is on causing the vomiting as drugs like antibiotics cause GI upset. I would give her vet a call in the morning to let them know you are seeing these problems, and they will advise you if they want you to bring her in. I hope this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daria. If she is not acting normal, this is worrisome. She should not be getting more painful this many days out from surgery. It is worth having her rechecked by a veterinarian. In the meantime, keep the incision clean and dry. Do not allow her to lick it. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

My older dog isn't walking after pyometra surgery. Should I worry?

I am concerned that she had the surgery Tuesday, and still isn't wanting to walk. She should be walking by now. I'd take her back into the vet first thing in the morning for a health check. The pyometra was a serious infection and being wobbly after pyometra surgery is normal. This should go away after a few days. Please keep giving her her pain medicine and antibiotics as prescribed. Should Holly deteriorate, not get better within the next two days or start vomiting, or not eat or drink she needs to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

My dog is lethargic and not peeing after spay surgery. Is this normal?

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. Why won't my dog eat 5 days after pyometra surgery? Is it normal?

This is not normal, so I would be somewhat concerned. I would be more concerned if she was also vomiting, had diarrhea, and/or a decrease in activity. Some pain medications can cause side-effects in the stomach and usually have directions not to give these when they are not eating. Make sure to double-check the medication labels for these warnings. If Diamond goes longer than 24 hours without eating, then I recommend contacting your vet. I hope that helps and Diamond gets better soon.

Is it normal for my puppy to be sleepy and inactive after an IV drip?

If Dora was in the hospital recently, she liekyl didn't sleep well. Also, the stress of receive an IV drip could have made her sleepy as well. if she recevied any antibiotics or medicines through the drip and not just fluids, then yes, these meds could also be making her sleepy. Make sure she is eating several small meals throughout the day to ensure her blood sugar is staying up. If she isn't eating, I would give her some nutrical (a high calorie vitamin supplement), karo syrup or something equivalent on her gums to help keep her blood sugar up. If she isn't improving or not eating, I would have your vet take another look at her. I hope this helps!
