Puppy lethargic, won't eat after vet for vomiting. Is this normal?

The vet can be pretty stressful, and it's possible the meds given caused some drowsiness (it would be hard to say without knowing what was given). I would keep an eye on Brinx and let him rest tonight and see how he is doing in the morning. If he is still lethargic in the AM or refuses to eat even a bland meal, letting you vet know is best.

It should be noted that even normal puppy vaccines can lead to some side effects such as lethargy (decreased activity, tiredness), swelling or tenderness around the injection site and even mild nausea (possibly the drooling). That being said, rarely dogs can undergo an allergic reaction to vaccines which often show up as vomiting, collapse, and swelling of the face or other limbs. If these have been observed she should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. In regards to the safety of administering the Heartguard and Nexgard along with the vaccines, it is standard protocol to begin these preventative medications at this time and are safe to give to a puppy of Lettie's age. The most important thing going forward is to continue to monitor Lettie for any worsening or changing of her clinical signs. For example, if she starts to vomit becomes even more tired or lethargic, continues to want to eat or do anything after more than a day, or even have swelling around her face then she needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately.

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

In some puppies with a significant burden of roundworms, vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a means of expelling the worms. This also can cause inappetence from nausea and mild lethargy as a result. Although rare, intussusception (essentially intestines that telescope into one another) can occur in cases of parasitism, which can cause vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. At this point, monitor Kai for changes tonight and try to tempt him to eat with boiled white meat chicken and white rice as a bland diet. If he is still lethargic and not eating by the morning, he should be examined by his vet. The greatest likelihood is simply that his body is working to expel the roundworms.

I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat. You could try to find a clinic that would work out a payment plan or apply for care credit and have her seen. Hope she feels better soon!

I'm sorry Milli isn't feeling well! It's relatively common for dogs to feel lethargic or sore after vaccines. It usually resolves on its own within 24 hours. If she has any vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling or hives I would take her to the vet right away. Otherwise, make sure she has access to water but I'd call your vet tomorrow if she's not back to normal by then.
