My puppy is sleepy and shaking head after vaccine and ear cleaning?

Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

Hello, sorry to hear about Maggie. The head shaking may be from the cleaning itself, especially if you put any liquid or a q-tip into her ear. This could only last a few hours or so and then she may be ok. However, if she has been scratching at her ear, she may have a very mild ear infection that could benefit from medications. Alternatively, she could be having allergies since she was also seen to be sneezing and allergies can cause itchy ears. If her signs continue longer than a day, then Maggie should be seen by her veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

This sounds like she is getting an ear infection, or has something stuck in her ear or mouth. It also could be from insect or ant bites on her face. It doesn't seem related to the surgery from her symptoms. Check her over carefully. Look at her face, the fur, check inside her mouth and in her ears to see if you can fine a cause for the face rubbing and head shaking. If her ears are hot, red and painful, or they have some discharge in them then she should have them checked and treated by your veterinarian. Please try to stop the rubbing as she can get skin sores or a hot spot if she rubs too hard. Use a cone on her if needed to stop the scratching. If this worsens and you can't find the reason please bring Emmy back for a recheck. They can give medication if needed to stop the rubbing and they should be able to diagnose the problem and treat it also. This should subside within 1-2 days. If it does not improve or it worsens, have Boomer evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Puppies should sleep more than an adult, so it could be normal for Kai. Sneezing could be an indicator of allergies or upper respiratory infection. If there is any discharge, I would recommend that Kai get checked out by a vet. If the head shaking occurs near a sneezing episode, it could be from the itchy feeling that comes before a sneeze. However, if it occurs at other times, it could be the sign of neurologic disease, hypoglycemia (which may also cause lethargy), something down in the ear, among a few others. If this occurs and is not associated with a sneeze, I would take Kai to the vet as soon as possible.

My suspicion is that this is injection-site pain and not a "true" vaccine reaction, however I do know that dogs (especially small ones) can be pretty painful in the limb they were vaccinated in for up to 36 hours afterwards. I wouldn't call it "normal" but we definitely see it - both of my own small dogs were painful after their last lepto vaccine. Because they can be pretty miserable, I would recommend calling your vet and asking if they might dispense a bit of pain relief - perhaps only 2 - 3 days worth - to make sure Ted is comfortable over the weekend. And if you see other more concerning signs - swelling about the head or face, difficulty breathing, vomiting, collapse - take him right into an emergency facility.
