My puppy is lethargic, shaking head, and rubbing face after spay. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 5 months and 3 days old | 10 lbs

My puppy (5 months old) was spayed 4 days ago (Sept. 27). She has been acting almost like her normal self for about 2-3 days now. Today she has appeared to be more lethargic. She's still eating, drinking, & going to the bathroom but not as frequently as she was. Her incision looks good & is continuing to heal. She has also been pawing at her face & shaking her head some today. She'll even try & rub her face on the carpet or furniture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like she is getting an ear infection, or has something stuck in her ear or mouth. It also could be from insect or ant bites on her face. It doesn't seem related to the surgery from her symptoms. Check her over carefully. Look at her face, the fur, check inside her mouth and in her ears to see if you can fine a cause for the face rubbing and head shaking. If her ears are hot, red and painful, or they have some discharge in them then she should have them checked and treated by your veterinarian. Please try to stop the rubbing as she can get skin sores or a hot spot if she rubs too hard. Use a cone on her if needed to stop the scratching. If this worsens and you can't find the reason please bring Emmy back for a recheck. They can give medication if needed to stop the rubbing and they should be able to diagnose the problem and treat it also. Poor pup! It sounds like she may be in pain still or having a hard time recovering from her surgery. I would let your vet know right away so they can either provide a different medication, or have her seen to make sure there isn't an infection or other complication that needs to be addressed.

My puppy has head tremors after spay surgery. Is it the cone?

Poor Lola! Her incision looks great. Could she be tremoring from the anxiety of wearing the cone? You could take it off of her and watch her closely to see if it improves. If so, you could consider putting an inflatable collar on her that will still prevent her from licking but causes a little less anxiety. Some other causes of head tremors could be pain, ear problems, muscle spasms, next pain, or even electrolyte abnormalities. If changing her e-collar doesn't help, I would have your vet take a look at her. I would try to get the episode on video as it may help your vet with diagnosis. I hope this helps!

My dog shakes head excessively after spay. What could it be?

I would like to see a video of it. Wondering how long this is going on. I would consider complete neuro exam and possibly bloodwork. Could she had ingested something she should not? Did you apply OTC flea medicine on her skin? Is she on meds post surgery ? What is her vaccination history? Please do not hesitate to repost with more details and a video if possible. My puppy is sleepy and shaking head after vaccine and ear cleaning?

She may be a little sleepy from the vaccine as vaccines can cause some mild lethargy for a day. If the lethargy persists than you should call your vet and let him/her know that she is experiencing some lethargy. She may be shaking her head because of the cleaning but if it continues she should be rechecked to make sure she doesn't have an infection. She may need a topical ear medication to treat.

Hi there. Different individuals can respond to anesthesia differently, just like humans. In my experience, it's not uncommon for some pets to be wobbly, confused, or otherwise "out of it" for up to 24 hours or so after an anesthetic event. As long as she's responsive and doesn't seem to be getting worse, this is likely normal. If she's still shaky and crying by tomorrow morning, I would recommend giving your vet a call as she may be painful and need some additional medication to help with this. For tonight, you can sit and snuggle with her if she seems to want this, or leave her alone if she doesn't want to be touched. Make sure she has food and water available if she wants it. Monitor for any bleeding from the incision site, pale gums, or increased weakness or acting less responsive, as these could indicate a more serious problem that needs an ER visit.

My dog is lethargic and not peeing after spay surgery. Is this normal?

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. Dog getting worse after spay: lethargic, not eating. What's wrong?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If she was bright and happy, and is now lethargic again, one concern is an infection within the abdomen. This is rare after a spay but can happen as a potential complication of any abdominal surgery. I recommend you have Molly back to your vet ASAP, or to an emergency clinic if your vet is closed. They will check her abdomen with an ultrasound to see if any free fluid is present, and will test this fluid if present. They might also do a blood test to look at her white and red blood cell levels. It might just be that Molly needs more pain medications, however we must rule out a 'peritonitis' (infection in the abdominal cavity) first. Best of luck with Molly, I hope she feels better soon!
