How to help dog shaking head violently for hours after ear cleaning?

Hello. The vinegar & water may be a little irritating, or your pet just does not like the feel of any liquid in his ears. Try distracting him with some play time or a good romp & see if he responds this way. Otherwise, most irritations/sensations calm pretty quickly. If he continues to show signs of discomfort, please your pet examined by a veterinarian to make sure there is nothing abnormal with his eas, such as a ruptured ear drum or the presence of any foreign material deep in the canal. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello, sorry to hear about Maggie. The head shaking may be from the cleaning itself, especially if you put any liquid or a q-tip into her ear. This could only last a few hours or so and then she may be ok. However, if she has been scratching at her ear, she may have a very mild ear infection that could benefit from medications. Alternatively, she could be having allergies since she was also seen to be sneezing and allergies can cause itchy ears. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Head shaking is usually a signs of itchy ears, which may be due to the E-collar rubbing or pressing on them. If your veterinarian checked him yesterday and did not see or smell any ear infections, it is most likely the cone collar causing his head shaking. Obviously the cone is necessary while his incision is healing, so I recommend monitoring him at home. If the shaking becomes incessant or aggressive, I recommend contacting your veterinarian directly to see if he needs to be examined again. I hope this is helpful!

I would recommend having Dexter examined by a veterinarian to get a good ear exam in order to determine if anything is stuck in the ear canal or if there is an infection that needs to be treated. I would not advise trying to stick anything into the ear at home or trying to remove anything yourself as you could potentially damage the ear drum. She may be a little sleepy from the vaccine as vaccines can cause some mild lethargy for a day. If the lethargy persists than you should call your vet and let him/her know that she is experiencing some lethargy. She may be shaking her head because of the cleaning but if it continues she should be rechecked to make sure she doesn't have an infection. She may need a topical ear medication to treat.
