My dog has a skin reaction to flea drops. When should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 27 days old | 20 lbs

12 hours after applying flea drops, I noticed my dog was having a topical allergic reaction which I could see on her belly, only. I rinsed her and washed her down with mild soap, removing whatever was left at her skin, but it has likely absorbed in her blood stream. Should I seek further vet care for a topical skin reaction to flea drops?

Use dawn dish soap to wash Kuni as it will strip the medication out better. Keep a watch on her- some dogs only have a mild reaction and washing is fine. If she develops a sore where it was applied, has trembling or seizure like activity she needs to be seen. And you may want to contact her vet anyway for a different flea control option.

  • If the skin reaction is still persistent and/or Kuni is showing signs of being off colour or in discomfort or itch or ANYTHING abnormal, I would recommend a check up treatment to stop possible allergy (steroids).
Otherwise further treatment is not needed.
