My dog licked Hartz flea drops. How long until I see signs of illness?

Usually the symptoms are pretty immediate. If you haven’t seen anything within 2-4 hours she will likely be fine. Most often what you will see is neurological symptoms. Anything abnormal, get her to a vet ASAP. I’d wait about a week before applying any topical flea/tick medications at this point. Please stay away from Hartz products in general. They are not recommended. I suggest you talk to your vet about what products are best to use in your area.

You did the right thing by washing the Hartz off of him right away, as it should only be used on puppies 12 weeks and older. Keep an eye on him for signs of toxicity, which include excessive salivation, twitching, vomiting, depression, and muscle tremors. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet immediately. I would wait a couple of days, and then apply the flea treatment program I will give you below. I would avoid giving Hartz at all. It's an extremely poor product, not very effective, and has caused a number of toxic reactions in dogs and cats. I would never recommend using it. I have a safe program that you can use on him now. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Good luck, I hope this helps!

They can tell you if the drooling is related and if you have to worry. It is possible she licked some of it off her fur. Personally I would recommend washing the product off with Dawn shampoo, repeatedly at the location of application. I wouldn't use it again for sure. I do think she will likely be fine. If you see muscle tremors, excessive salivation, paw flicking, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, take her into a vet immediately. Hopefully, she will be fine.

Use dawn dish soap to wash Kuni as it will strip the medication out better. Keep a watch on her- some dogs only have a mild reaction and washing is fine. If she develops a sore where it was applied, has trembling or seizure like activity she needs to be seen. And you may want to contact her vet anyway for a different flea control option.

Poor girl. I suspect she is having a mild reaction to the Hartz flea medication. Unfortunately, this particular flea prevention has been shown to have adverse effects in many cats that cause neurological issues stemming anywhere from muscle twitching to full on seizures. I would recommend rinsing the product off as best you can using Dawn dish detergent, followed by a soothing cat friendly conditioner from your local pet store to rehydrate the skin. And then a vet visit is best to get her fully evaluated to make sure she doesn't require any additional treatment (i..e muscle relaxer) or antihistamines. I hope that your fur baby Lucy is able to make a full and speedy recovery and its best to get her on a higher quality flea prevention (i.e Revolution, Cheristin, Advantage is ok) next time to limit adverse reactions in the future. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Some of these products can cause GI upset, excess drooling or irritation around the mounting if licked or ingested. These products typically dry in several hours. Apply it before bedtime, place the e-collar and by morning, she should be fine. As an alternative, there are oral flea and tick preventatives that can be used instead of topicals. Discuss options with your veterinarian.
