My dog's skin is irritated by Frontline Plus. How to stop scratching?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! If the itching started just after the application of the Frontline some dogs can have a hypersensitivity type reaction to topical medications like this where it can cause severe irritation to the skin. Poor Mac! I would definitely bathe him thoroughly to get the product off of him. An oatmeal shampoo may help soothe him. And if he is 85 pounds, he can receive 100mg (4 tablets) of Benadryl twice a day. With him having so many sores, I would recommend to see your vet because he is likely going to need some antibiotics and maybe some steroids to help with the reaction. I would not give frontline again. I would consider trying an oral flea preventative next time. I hope this helps.

it may be a reaction to the medicine. The best thing to do is bathe him in dawn dish washing liquid to strip the medicine and oils from his coat and skin. If he starts twitching or having tremors, then he needs to go to a vet. If he is not normal by morning then I would take him in to see if there is something else going on

If he is having a localized reaction to the ingredients in the topical medication, then it's best to bathe him in an aloe based or oatmeal based shampoo from your local pet store at this point. You have stripped off as much product as you can with the Dawn. Also try applying a topical hot spot spray from your local pet store may help provide some topical relief. Hot spot sprays typically have a steroid in them, which is a good anti-inflammatory. You could talk to your vet about switching from frontline to Nexgard. Also, if he has any skin lesions, he may need additional medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications to control the itching. It would be best to call your vet and schedule a recheck examination.

I'm so sorry to hear that Smokey is having this problem. Dogs that have flea allergies can be miserable with only 1 flea bite per week, so it doesn't take very many fleas to cause a problem. I have been very happy with Nexgard. It works differently than Frontline, so it might be more effective. There are a couple of different oral flea prevention products that can be given even though you have already done Frontline, so they will work together to get the problem under control ASAP. Fleas are a very common cause of scratching, so it will be worthwhile to apply Frontline if he is not on any other flea products at the moment. There are also some other causes of itching, like mites and certain skin diseases, so if the Frontline is not helping within three days of use, then it would be best to take DC to a vet for diagnosis and treatment of his condition.
