My dog has sinusitis. Are there non-antibiotic treatment options?

You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. See link below. You can also put her in a small bathroom with a hot steamy shower going to allow the steam to help break up the mucus. If it isn't improving, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Unfortunately, a lot of dog end up needing antibiotics to help get rid of these upper respiratory infections. A blood test may be able to indicate any infections present but the vast majority of cases do have a low grade infection due to the trauma and injury associated with prolonged coughing and do benefit from a course of antibiotics if unwell. I would also recommend a course of prednisone to settle the condition and allow the inflammation and irritation to reduce and natural antiinflammatories may be considered to try to maintain the condition thereafter. The side effects of steroids are generally dose and time related and short courses are of limited risk of side effects compared to the benefits produced

Instead, I recommend you have Boo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If they agree that it does look like a sinus infection they would prescribe antibiotics. Unfortunately, without an exam or testing it would be hard to say what can be done to help. A good first step is to try and find the cause of the sinus and throat swelling through bloodwork, X-rays, exam, etc. Possible causes may include an allergy to something in the environment, an allergic reaction to a bite or sting, food allergies, illness, infections, growths, etc. As the treatment varies depending on the cause, finding the underlying cause is best. Treatment may include medications such as allergy meds or antibiotics, or additional tests or procedures to help reduce symptoms.

Poor Kane! You should call the vet that prescribed the tetracycline and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to add or change antibiotics. He might also need an anti-inflammatory to help decrease any inflammation. I don't think an OTC anti-histamine would help and I don't recommend giving anything without talking to your vet. Your vet may also want to get a nasal x-ray to look for abnormalities since it doesn't seem to be getting better. Hope he gets better soon!

I'm sorry to hear Cooper isn't feeling well. If he is having recurrent infections there may be a source of the problem in his nasal passages. This could be a growth, a foreign body, or an infected tooth. I recommend discussing a sedated oral exam and possible skull radiographs with your vet. This must be really frustrating for you! Since four different antibiotics did not improve Skye's condition, I would think that her nasal discharge is either not due to bacterial causes or is a highly antibiotic resistant bacterium. Other causes of nasal discharge can include fungal infections, viruses, masses in the nasal cavity, presence of foreign material (I once saw carpet fibers cause nasal issues!), etc. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any at home remedies that will help Skye. At this point, I would recommend having your vet recheck her and consider x-rays or a nasal culture as the next diagnostic steps.
