What to do for dog's chronic nasal discharge when antibiotics fail?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 7 years and 11 months old | 85 lbs

I have an 8 year old Husky mix dog. She has had a sinus condition for 7 months now. I took her to the Vet 4 times for this. He prescribed 4 different rounds of antibiotics . None of these worked for her. Her symptoms are congestion with minor nasal discharge.. Nothing else appears to be wrong with her. Do you have any suggestions for something I can try?

This must be really frustrating for you! Since four different antibiotics did not improve Skye's condition, I would think that her nasal discharge is either not due to bacterial causes or is a highly antibiotic resistant bacterium. Other causes of nasal discharge can include fungal infections, viruses, masses in the nasal cavity, presence of foreign material (I once saw carpet fibers cause nasal issues!), etc. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any at home remedies that will help Skye. At this point, I would recommend having your vet recheck her and consider x-rays or a nasal culture as the next diagnostic steps.

My dog's green nasal discharge returned from one nostril. What's next?

If the nasal discharge continues, especially only on one side, I would be concerned about a possible foreign body in his sinus cavity or even something like cancer. The next step if not already done would be lab test, potential he a CT scan of his skull or/and even a rhinoscopy where we put a camera up his nose to examine for anything. Your veterinarian can determine with you which of those steps would be best suited are even available in your area.

I'm sorry Mickey isn't doing well! Yes, I agree the next step is to have the interior of his nose examined to see if he has a fungal infection, foreign body, or tumor causing this constant blocked nose. He can be well sedated so they can look up his nose, and I would recommend doing it. You have tried antibiotics without success and further testing is needed.

Dog's nose still running after meds, yellow discharge. Vet recheck?

Yes I would schedule a recheck if the discharge is still brown or yellow and hasn't started to resolve after a few days of antibiotics and other medications as it is possible there is something stuck in the nose causing irritation, or the infection requires more targeted medications. I would also make sure to keep Fray eating and drinking. You can also clear away any nasal discharge that is crusting around the nose to help keep it easier for her to breathe.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, a CT scan would be the next diagnostic for something like this. This is very important as I am afraid this could either be a nasal cancer or possibly a severe nasal fungal infection. A CT scan helps to distinguish these conditions and a biopsy will help confirm it. Rhinoscopy is needed in some cases to better visualize the nasal cavity after the CT scan is done. Why does my dog's runny nose keep returning after antibiotics?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If a runny nose is returning after a course of antibiotics has stopped there is concern for a foreign object stuck in the nose. Another course of antibiotics won't help. The best thing to do would be to scope or flush the nose to see if anything comes out, or to get a sample. Fungal disease is common in the US as well and is a consideration of cause. I would recommend a revisit with your vet. You can discuss allergies at that time as well, as a runny nose can be caused by allergies. Best of luck with Olive!
