My dog's nose won't stop running. Can I give him an antihistamine?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 10 months old

I have been giving Kane Tetracycline 100mg capsules. I give it to him in his food. The problem is that his nose is still running. I wipe it about 30 or 40 times a day. The picture I took yesterday should show you what my buddy is fighting. What can I use that would help dry up his nose that is a non-drowsey formula (maybe an antihistamine). Needless to say, my love for him is second to none.

Poor Kane! You should call the vet that prescribed the tetracycline and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to add or change antibiotics. He might also need an anti-inflammatory to help decrease any inflammation. I don't think an OTC anti-histamine would help and I don't recommend giving anything without talking to your vet. Your vet may also want to get a nasal x-ray to look for abnormalities since it doesn't seem to be getting better. Hope he gets better soon!

Have him examined by your veterinarian to make sure it is antibiotics that Kane should be taking. Inappropriate antibiotic use may lead to resistant bacteria and could complicate any underlying condition. Legally, we are prohibited from recommending medications, even OTC meds, or providing dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and patient-veterinarian-client relationship. In the meantime, you can run a hot shower for 10-15 minutes, place Kane in the bathroom (NOT in the shower) to breathe in the steam for 15-20 minutes. It may loosen up any congestion and make breathing easier. Do not give any additional medications without the advice of your vet.

I would try putting a humidifier in the room with him overnight or putting him in the bathroom while you run a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes to provide some beneficial moisture to his airways. If he develops discharge from the nose, coughing, eye discharge, decreased appetite, decreased energy these would be reasons to seek veterinary care. You can ask your vet if it would be ok to give him an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Zyrtec to see if it could be allergy related as well. We do use these drugs in dogs, but I always recommend checking with your vet before starting any new medication.

Why does my dog's runny nose keep returning after antibiotics?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If a runny nose is returning after a course of antibiotics has stopped there is concern for a foreign object stuck in the nose. Another course of antibiotics won't help. The best thing to do would be to scope or flush the nose to see if anything comes out, or to get a sample. Fungal disease is common in the US as well and is a consideration of cause. I would recommend a revisit with your vet. Allergies can have a wide variety of causes, including flea allergies, food allergies, or allergies to our surrounding environment. If possible, the first step in managing Bam Bam's signs is to determine the underlying allergen. Make sure he is on a high quality flea preventative (Nexgard, Bravecto, or Advantix) once a month year round. Consider if he has been receiving table scraps or has had a recent diet change that may be contributing in cases of food allergies. Otherwise, antihistamines (such as Benadryl) can provide some relief in some pets, but you should always speak with your vet before giving any medication to Bam Bam because they are aware of his previous medical history and any other concurrent medications that are being administered.

Given that the antibiotics are not working, I would speak to your vet about further testing on Mya. It could be caused by allergies, and blood tests and intradermal skin tests can be done to see if that is causing her symptoms. It does need to be diagnosed so that she can be successfully treated to relieve her symptoms.

Dog's nose still running after meds, yellow discharge. Vet recheck?

Yes I would schedule a recheck if the discharge is still brown or yellow and hasn't started to resolve after a few days of antibiotics and other medications as it is possible there is something stuck in the nose causing irritation, or the infection requires more targeted medications. I would also make sure to keep Fray eating and drinking. You can also clear away any nasal discharge that is crusting around the nose to help keep it easier for her to breathe.
