Is it normal for my dog to be sick and hide after getting vaccines?

Poor little Kitana! Pets can vomit for many reasons and it could have been related to the vaccines. If she is ill beyond 24 hours, then I recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian. I recommend to call her veterinarian and let them know what you saw at home. The doctor may want to administer diphenhydramine prior to her next round of vaccines just in case it was a vaccine reaction. Keep Kitana quiet today and monitor her closely. Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

The answer to both your questions is yes. Some animals, just like people, are more sore and have more of a reaction to vaccines than others. It would be OK for him to be "down" for a couple days as long as he is eating and drinking. If he was down and not eating/drinking then that would be a more severe reaction and he would need some treatment by your vet to counteract the reaction. Again, just like people, some dogs will wake up more energetic than others! Great questions!

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. It isn't entirely uncommon for dogs to feel sore and puny after a round of vaccines - just like people can. They can cause soreness at the area of injection and mild general malaise, which would explain Snapple's unwillingness to move and whimpering when you try to touch her. This will probably abate over the next day, but if you notice any other symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or diarrhea, please call your vet as these may indicate a more serious reaction. This is very unlikely as most severe vaccine reactions occur within an hour of the shots, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. If she's still acting puny tomorrow, feel free to call your vet and let them know. They may be able to recommend or prescribe an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever that will make her feel much better. Cruz is adorable and looks quite sad for himself! Most vaccine reactions occur within the first few hours of the vaccine, but some can be delayed by up to a week. Delayed reactions are more likely to involve vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. Cruz should go back to his vet because he will likely need a course of steroids and antihistamines to help this issue. Until you can get to the vet, try to tempt him to eat with a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice. I hope that he feels better soon!
