My puppy threw up after his shots. Is this a normal reaction?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 3.9 lbs

My 9 week old puppy got his kennel cough and parvo shot today around 3:30pm and he just threw up.. is this normal?

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Your dog may have been having a vaccine reaction. If he is acting normal now then there is nothing you need to do. If however, he is still acting unusual you should have him checked out just in case. It is also important to let your vet know of this possible reaction so steps can be taken in the future to help prevent them.

Sometimes vaccinations can make dogs feel a bit nauseous, even the stress of going in can make them sick. I would with old his food for 12 hours. If he has not settled by then or starts to look very ill take him to the vet.

It's very unlikely that he got her first set of shots as she is too young for that, even if she did it would not be effective at this age. you need to take him to the vet in order to get the vomiting checked and treated, it could be a viral infection (most likely) and he might need antibiotics and fluid therapy.

Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction. This may have nothing to do with the vaccination but it would be best to have him examined and go from there. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Is puppy vomiting and crate accidents normal after a parvo shot?

Vomiting after a vaccination is not normal and is a sign of a potentially severe vaccine reaction. It sounds like the vomiting did not occur right after the vaccination, so it may not be related to the vaccination, but vomiting is not considered a normal vaccine reaction. Vomiting after a vaccination is not considered normal, so I would not wait to have him treated. My puppy threw up yellow after first vaccines, is this normal?

Hello! Sounds like Gus vomitted up some bile. As long as this was the only instance of vomit and he otherwise appears to be acting like himself, I would not worry. It's unlikely that the vomit is related to the vaccines as vaccine reactions typically happen immediately or within a couple of hours after administration of the vaccine. Continue to keep an eye on him for any other episodes of vomiting or changes in his behavior. Hopefully this was a one time event and won't cause Gus or you to miss a beat! Hope this helps.

Is my puppy's sleepiness normal after vaccinations, or should I worry?

Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

Why is my dog throwing up after a vet visit and vaccinations?

Coco may be stressed from the visit or having a mild reaction to the vaccinations. You can try to offer her a small meal of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this settles her stomach. However, if her vomiting persists or if any other signs of illness develop (like diarrhea, inappetance, or lethargy) I recommend having her examined by a veterinarian right away.
