My dog is sick after flea drops. Is it a bad reaction? What to do?

Poor Sam. It’s possible he may have had a reaction to the medication. I recommend to wash him with dish soap to help remove some of the medication. I also recommend to have Sam examined by his veterinarian for some bloodwork to make sure there has not been any liver damage. If Sam cannot tolerate a collar or the topical preventive, talk with your veterinarian about starting him on an oral medication like Nexgard. Best of luck.

He could be having an adverse reaction to the flea/tick medication. Give him a bath immediately! Then contact your local vet to have him examined and treated for an acute allergic reaction. The most important thing though is to wash off the product. Using dawn dish detergent works best to strip the product off. There is a chance that he has absorbed a good bit of the medication already, but this will help prevent further absorption and subsequent illness. Most adverse reactions to flea/tick products do well with time (minimum 12 hrs to see improvement). I hope your puppy Harley recovers soon!

I agree, it's impossible to know if this is unrelated (symptoms like this could be due to a compressed disc in the spine or cranial abdominal pain) or a reaction to the flea medication. Use dawn dish soap to wash Kuni as it will strip the medication out better. Keep a watch on her- some dogs only have a mild reaction and washing is fine. If she develops a sore where it was applied, has trembling or seizure like activity she needs to be seen. And you may want to contact her vet anyway for a different flea control option.

Most reactions from that medicine include drooling, shaking, tremors and seizures. If none of these are noted and she is walking and eating fine then you probably do not have anything to worry about. You can monitor for signs over the next 24 hours. In cases of reactions the best thing to do is bath the medicine off

There are no antibiotics that are used to help with this kind of issue, unless the vet believes that one might assist with inflammation or prevent a secondary infection. Based on the clinical signs you have described, the best medication that the vet could prescribe would be something to nausea, diarrhea, and acid production. In terms of diagnostics I would run if you came into my office with these symptoms, I would definitely recommend starting with some baseline blood work and potentially some x-rays to rule out a possible foreign body in the intestines. You really should get him seen by a vet. Take the products you used on him with you. He may be having a reaction to it. It is very rare for a male dog to have a true UTI (just like a male human) so I highly doubt that is the problem. Not eating and drinking a lot of water is a problem. Please take him to the vet.
