My dog is lethargic after Advantix. Is it a flea treatment reaction?

He could be having an adverse reaction to the flea/tick medication. Give him a bath immediately! Then contact your local vet to have him examined and treated for an acute allergic reaction. The most important thing though is to wash off the product. Using dawn dish detergent works best to strip the product off. There is a chance that he has absorbed a good bit of the medication already, but this will help prevent further absorption and subsequent illness. Most adverse reactions to flea/tick products do well with time (minimum 12 hrs to see improvement). I hope your puppy Harley recovers soon!

it may be a reaction to the medicine. The best thing to do is bathe him in dawn dish washing liquid to strip the medicine and oils from his coat and skin. If he starts twitching or having tremors, then he needs to go to a vet. If he is not normal by morning then I would take him in to see if there is something else going on

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Scout! I haven't heard of limping as a side effect of flea shampoo. Usually the side effects are GI (vomiting, diarrhea, not eating), lethargy, skin irritation or neurologic (seizures, twitching). I think maybe he hurt himself before, during or after the bath and that is the the cause of the limping. The discomfort and lethargy could be from the bath or the painful leg. If he is still uncomfortable, lethargic, limping, not eating through out the day then I would bathe him in Dawn to remove the flea product and take him to the Vet. I recommend the edible flea and tick products (Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica) to prevent and get rid of flea infestations. I wish Scout the best!

Poor girl. Panting and drinking a lot of water can indicate that she is having a hypersensitivity reaction to the product. Although this product is considred safe for pets, it has been known to have more side effects than some other products on the market. If she is settled now then that is a good sign that she may be recovering from this. The Benadryl should help her with her mild reaction. Continue to monitor Legend for any signs of a serious problem which includes: excessive vomiting, continuous panting for more than 30 mins or so, severe lethargy (unresponsiveness, etc), lack of appetite, or pale gums. If seen then Legend needs to see your local vet (or ER vet) right away for treatment. I hope that Legend continues to improve with the Benadryl, and I would definitely recommend avoiding this medication in the future. Poor Sam. It’s possible he may have had a reaction to the medication. I recommend to wash him with dish soap to help remove some of the medication. I also recommend to have Sam examined by his veterinarian for some bloodwork to make sure there has not been any liver damage. If Sam cannot tolerate a collar or the topical preventive, talk with your veterinarian about starting him on an oral medication like Nexgard. Best of luck.

Lethargy is a very general sign of illness in dogs, and can be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Lethargy isn't a side effect of Frontline, so I'm suspecting that it may be to to a medical illness. As long as Scout is eating and drinking normally as well as going to the bathroom normally, I would keep an eye on her for now. Should she still be lethargic in 48 hours, then I would be concerned and take her into the vet for an exam. If she stops eating and drinking, and develops other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, then I would take her into a vet right away. I hope this helps!

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.
