My dog is lethargic after Advantix. Is it a flea treatment reaction?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 26 lbs

I treated my dog with Advantix flea and tick treatment one day ago. He is now holding his head down when he walks, he is walking very slowly and is lethargic. His eyes are also slightly closed. He is eating and drinking ok and going to the toilet with no issues. His gums are pink and return to pink after a couple of seconds when I press them. His ears and paws are cold. I don't know if the Advantix is linked or a coincidence but he doesnt seem well.

I agree, it's impossible to know if this is unrelated (symptoms like this could be due to a compressed disc in the spine or cranial abdominal pain) or a reaction to the flea medication.
I recommend to play it safe and have Harvey examined by the veterinarian. The doctor will likely get an idea of pain or skeletal abnormality from the physical exam. You may also wash him in Dawn dish soap to remove the flea product just in case. Be very gentle when handling him. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
