My Redbone Coonhound shivers every morning. Is she freezing at night?

Dogs can warm up pretty quickly, so if he is back to acting normally, I would not be concerned. You can monitor for signs of continued shivering, lethargy, decreased appetite. Minnesota is really cold in winter! It could be he was cold from the outside, and that's why he was shivering. It could have taken him a while to warm up. Given he is young and it gets so cold where you live, I'd get a coat for him to wear when outside, and limit his time out there as much as possible when it gets really cold out. Bring him out to potty, and take him right back inside when he's done. Have a warm bed set up for him with blankets. I hope this helps!

Your pup could be shivering because she is cold or in pain. Because she is acting normally, I would monitor her for now. Take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. If it's above 103F, or the shivering continues through the night, I would have her seen by a vet.

If a dog is cold, they will shiver and may be more lethargic than usual. German Shepherds have a thick coat, but the lowest temperature I wouldn’t leave a dog outside is below 45F. I hope this helps.

Some common, but benign reasons would be from nervousness/excitement, dreaming while sleeping, or being cold or frightened. Some other, more serious reasons for shivering, can include ingestion of toxins, low blood sugar, low calcium, or even seizure activity. In some cases, dogs exposed to the canine distemper virus can have muscle tremors as a residual side effect from the virus. Based on Chance's history of being adopted, with a likely unknown history, it may be a good idea to bring him in for an examination by his veterinarian. This way, they can make sure no serious illnesses are suspected. What can be helpful for your veterinarian, since you don't know much about Chance's history, would be to log when these episodes occur, how long they last, and even get a video recording of a few of them. Again, as I mentioned above, shivering can just be for some very unexciting and logical reasons, such as excitement or being cold, but if it is concerning you, and becoming more and more frequent, an examination by his veterinarian would be a great idea! As long as you are comfortable, Ruby should be comfortable. If you see her shivering, you can try a tiny sweater, but by your description, it sounds as if this would be more stressful for her. Make sure she has a comfy, padded bed she can go to if she gets chilly.

If she is unvaccinated for distemper, I would potentially consider this as a possibility but in older animals, distemper is not commonly seen. She may be uncomfortable from something (painful) or an infection / systemic disease.
