How can I tell if my dog is cold and what temperature is too cold?

Once a puppy reaches about 4 weeks of age, it should be comfortable with the same temps you are comfortable in. If it is too cold for you, it is too cold for the pup. You can monitor for lethargy, shivering and cold ears or paws also.

Hello, the Australian Shepherd dog is actually a herding working breed. It is not recognized as an arctic breed such as a Huskie. Therefore Aussies cold tolerance is not as good as an arctic breed. In general, if it is too cold outside for you, then its too cold outside for your dog. Their thick coat will help keep them warm some, however, it would not be ideal to keep your dog outside in 32 degree weather as this is close to freezing. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 8 degrees is OK as long as Tobi has a comfortable bed with blankets. Dogs are comfortable at a similar temperature range as we are, maybe a bit cooler. Puppies have to be warmer than adult dogs. Make sure he has a warm bed and little house to climb into. If you keep him inside with where you are, then he should be warm enough. Best of luck with Tobi!

Young puppies are susceptible to cold, and therefore should not be left outside in any cold weather for longer than 10 minutes. I would not leave them out in any weather below 40-45F for longer than 10 minutes.

Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside. That is way too cold for Teddy to be sleeping outdoors, especially a four month old puppy. He should be sleeping indoors in that weather, and I would not allow him to sleep outdoors when the temperature is below 5C.

Dogs can warm up pretty quickly, so if he is back to acting normally, I would not be concerned. You can monitor for signs of continued shivering, lethargy, decreased appetite.
