My dog was shivering in the cold. How to check for hypothermia?

Your pup could be shivering because she is cold or in pain. Because she is acting normally, I would monitor her for now. Take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. If it's above 103F, or the shivering continues through the night, I would have her seen by a vet.

The only concern with milk is that it's not well-digested by adults and can lead to diarrhea. While Sakura should be off of milk by now (I see that she is over four months old), she likely has digestive enzymes for it and should be able to tolerate it well. The fact that it was cold is not too concerning for hypothermia in a dog this age, but she appears to be quite small (3.4lbs), so she it makes sense that she would get a chill from drinking a fair amount of cold fluid. However, as long as she's warm and acting normal, there's nothing else that needs to be done and she should be fine. The outdoor temperature is cold right now so if he was exposed to very cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time, he may be hypothermic. Hello. Making any kind of assumption or diagnosis is very difficult just based on panting & shivering, but I can tell you this can be typical signs of pain & an elevated temperature. Since he has periods of normal behavior, my concerns is there is some underlying pain that JosLouis is experiencing. She is probably shivering because her body is trying to adjust after losing so much food and fluid when she vomited. Try to keep her calm and comfortable for now. Minnesota is really cold in winter! It could be he was cold from the outside, and that's why he was shivering. It could have taken him a while to warm up. Given he is young and it gets so cold where you live, I'd get a coat for him to wear when outside, and limit his time out there as much as possible when it gets really cold out. Bring him out to potty, and take him right back inside when he's done. Have a warm bed set up for him with blankets. I hope this helps!
