Why is my puppy shaking and wheezing after coming in from the cold?

Dogs can get colds, however more serious issues such as infections, respiratory issues, allergies and even canine influenza can mimic cold symptoms in dogs as well. If Bentley's symptoms don't resolve after a day, his coughing continues or he seems in distress, he doesn't want to eat or drink, or he has a fever, seeking veterinary care ASAP to figure out the issue is best.

Dogs can warm up pretty quickly, so if he is back to acting normally, I would not be concerned. You can monitor for signs of continued shivering, lethargy, decreased appetite. You can look at some YouTube videos ("reverse sneezing dogs") to see if Buddy's symptoms are similar. Look at a few different videos. If you think this is what he was doing, it is no big deal. The cold air probably just irritated his nasal passages. There is no treatment for reverse sneezing; it is not a problem/issue and it is not life-threatening. Reverse sneezing is very common. If it was not reverse sneezing, then I would suggest you just monitor him and if the behavior recurs then you should take Buddy to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

With your description, I would be concerned about a respiratory problem, hypothermia or systemic infection. The outdoor temperature is cold right now so if he was exposed to very cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time, he may be hypothermic. The main concern is that he is having to position his head in this fashion to breath. That is very worrisome for pathology in the lungs. Whenever there is a change in breathing pattern, the pet should be examined. I recommend to have him examined right away. It's better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps.

It is quite odd that your puppy doesn't want to walk on the floor. However you can try laying down blankets or towels on the floor. It may be a texture thing and he likes to feel something soft and comfortable. You can also try placing his favorite toy or treat on the floor to ease him into getting used to the texture. He will eventually get over this the more you expose him and the more he matures. Also if he shivering in his sleep could very well be his body reacting to a dream he is having. Puppy dreams tend to be quite vivid causing what appears to be violent movements of the body and sometimes heavy panting. As long as this is only occurring while he is sleeping then chances are he's completely fine. Puppies usually will grow out of these vivid dreams as they get older. However if you feel that he is having breathing issues while awake then definitely take him in to your veterinarian for a thorough examination.
