Why is my puppy shivering, drooling, and biting me after hives?

I think there may be two things going on with Less. First, the hives on his skin are actually spots of infection that will need to be treated with antibiotics. Although this problem does need to be addressed I am more concerned with the fact that he is not eating and not moving around like he should. What you describe sounds like he may have back pain, probably from an inflammed disc in his neck or back. This usually requires medication to help relieve the pain and get him comfortable again. Because there are multiple issues going on with Less I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be evaluated. If left untreated the skin condition will spread and his back pain will progress. With the lump in the throat and severe fever he really shuold be seen by a vet - I would be afraid he has an abscess which needs draining in order to prevent it from restricting his breathing. I would also recommend intravenous antibiotics at this stage in order to speed recovery. Contact your vets office to discuss the case - they may be happy to prescribe a temporary dosage until he can be assessed.

Shaking and panting can also indicate pain. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This is very common and can make a dog hesitant to walk, jump.or go up stairs. Prior to your appointment, keep him very quiet and carry him if he needs to move. Limiting his movements can help to ease any pain he may be experiencing. Offer water so that he does not become dehydrated. He may not want to eat though if he is nauseous. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be be toxic to dogs. You can warm towels in the dryer to wrap him in as most dogs like to be warm. I hope this information helps!

My biggest concern in a very young puppy with the signs you described is that she has a low blood sugar. This can worsen to the point of seizures and can be fatal if not treated. If she will not eat, then I would recommend rubbing Karo syrup or maple syrup on her gums and taking her to a veterinarian immediately. Oh my. Poor guy. His symptoms unfortunately aren’t specific for one disease process to speak ok. Lethargy, shivering and weakness can be caused by just about any disease process including: toxin ingestion, underlying heart disease, or even anaphylactic shock is a possibility. But one thing is sure, Snoopy is in need of medical care if this has been going on for more than 6 hrs or so. He will need some diagnostic testing (bloodwork analysis to start) to determine what the underlying problem is so that we know how best to help Snoopy get better.
