My dog is shaking, drooling, and crying. Is he having a seizure?

Hello, seizures are very scary, & in an elderly dog like Harley, it could mean some serious inflammation in the brain. Since he is so weak, I would really encourage you to take him to an emergency clinic for treatment. He may need some anti-inflammatory medication or anti-nausea medication to help with the drooling. Shaking and panting can also indicate pain. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This is very common and can make a dog hesitant to walk, jump.or go up stairs. Prior to your appointment, keep him very quiet and carry him if he needs to move. Limiting his movements can help to ease any pain he may be experiencing. Offer water so that he does not become dehydrated. He may not want to eat though if he is nauseous. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be be toxic to dogs. I am very sorry to hear about Best, but it sounds like he truly needs veterinary care as soon as possible. I would be concerned about an allergic reaction but also it is concerning that he has drooling and shivering with aggression. This makes us very concerned about the possibility of rabies or canine distemper. He should be seen right away by a vet to examine him and try to determine what is going on and if he can be treated.

This could be a form of seizure activity. I recommend getting your dog seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and lab work. If you can get a video of the episode, please do, so your vet will know what you're seeing. Sustained or repeated seizures can cause the body temperature to rise to dangerous levels and increases the risk of brain damage. When you have a chance, take a look around and see if you can find anything he might have gotten into, since poisoning is one of the causes of seizures. If he has a history of liver or kidney disease, this is also a potential cause. Sometimes we never know why a pet has a seizure. If he does have a series of seizures, your vet will want to do an exam and bloodwork to try and determine a cause and potentially put your pet on anti-seizure medication to lessen the chances of this happening again in the future.

It sounds like Flower may be having a seizure. I would recommend to make an appointment with your veterinarian and plan on running some blood work. Seizures can be present due to epilepsy, liver disease, electrolyte imbalance or a tumor in the brain. Bloodwork will help to know if the liver or electrolytes are to blame for the seizures. Oh dear! This sounds extremely serious - your dog may be having a seizure, or may have a serious illness or ingested something toxic. I'm afraid there is really nothing you can do at home for a problem this serious, so the best advice I can give you is to take your dog to the nearest veterinarian immediately.
