Why is my dog shaking head after eye removal surgery? Is it the cone?

It could be the stitches are irritating and itchy which is causing Grizzly to shake his head more, however keeping an eye both on the wound and his ears are a good idea. If his symptoms worsen, the wound or ears seem to look worse, or other signs of illness appear, having your vet take a look and rechecking both areas is best. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Grizzly may also help prevent him from pawing at or shaking his head as much to allow the area to heal.

Poor Lola! Her incision looks great. Could she be tremoring from the anxiety of wearing the cone? You could take it off of her and watch her closely to see if it improves. If so, you could consider putting an inflatable collar on her that will still prevent her from licking but causes a little less anxiety. Some other causes of head tremors could be pain, ear problems, muscle spasms, next pain, or even electrolyte abnormalities. If changing her e-collar doesn't help, I would have your vet take a look at her. I would try to get the episode on video as it may help your vet with diagnosis. I hope this helps!

I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this with Riley. I have a few suggestions for you. The first is to make sure you have treated any potential cause of head shaking. Some dogs will shake their head with very mild inflammation of the ear canal and do not require an ear infection. Short term, you can look into using a snood (http://www.thesnoodfactory.com/). They are most commonly used to keep long ears with fur out of food, but may be useful in this situation. Finally, I would ask your veterinarian if they have any suspicion that Riley may have ear margin vasculitis. That can cause wounds on the tips of the ears that won't heal well without a medication like Pentoxifylline (http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1585). Head shaking doesn't indicate anything on its own. It could be that there is something irritating Orvia's ear or nose, itchy skin, a bug bite causing a reaction, neurologic or muscular issues, or more. If you are seeing other signs and symptoms in addition to the head shaking (loss of balance, nausea, confusion, etc), discharge from the ears or nose, or the head shaking doesn't resolve, having a vet take a look in person is best.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is probably behavioral, not medical. As the outside air hits him he shakes as we do, in stretching, in the morning. Dogs also shake their heads out of excitement. My dogs shakes his head and body EVERY TIME he gets up and A LOT when excited. It is normal for him and he's never had an ear infection. Stone is normal to be shaking his head when he goes outside. Have a great day!

I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
