My puppy has head tremors after spay surgery. Is it the cone?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Head shaking is usually a signs of itchy ears, which may be due to the E-collar rubbing or pressing on them. If your veterinarian checked him yesterday and did not see or smell any ear infections, it is most likely the cone collar causing his head shaking. Obviously the cone is necessary while his incision is healing, so I recommend monitoring him at home. If the shaking becomes incessant or aggressive, I recommend contacting your veterinarian directly to see if he needs to be examined again. I hope this is helpful!

This sounds like she is getting an ear infection, or has something stuck in her ear or mouth. It also could be from insect or ant bites on her face. It doesn't seem related to the surgery from her symptoms. Check her over carefully. Look at her face, the fur, check inside her mouth and in her ears to see if you can fine a cause for the face rubbing and head shaking. If her ears are hot, red and painful, or they have some discharge in them then she should have them checked and treated by your veterinarian. Please try to stop the rubbing as she can get skin sores or a hot spot if she rubs too hard. Use a cone on her if needed to stop the scratching. If this worsens and you can't find the reason please bring Emmy back for a recheck. They can give medication if needed to stop the rubbing and they should be able to diagnose the problem and treat it also. I would like to see a video of it. Wondering how long this is going on. I would consider complete neuro exam and possibly bloodwork. Could she had ingested something she should not? Did you apply OTC flea medicine on her skin? Is she on meds post surgery ? What is her vaccination history? Please do not hesitate to repost with more details and a video if possible. Poor pup! It sounds like she may be in pain still or having a hard time recovering from her surgery. I would let your vet know right away so they can either provide a different medication, or have her seen to make sure there isn't an infection or other complication that needs to be addressed.

If Lola is being too crazy post-spay, then I would contact the veterinarian to see if the veterinarian can prescribe Lola a sedative to help keep her more calm. The last thing you want is for Lola to open up her incision because she is too active. I hope this helps!

Hi there. Different individuals can respond to anesthesia differently, just like humans. In my experience, it's not uncommon for some pets to be wobbly, confused, or otherwise "out of it" for up to 24 hours or so after an anesthetic event. As long as she's responsive and doesn't seem to be getting worse, this is likely normal. If she's still shaky and crying by tomorrow morning, I would recommend giving your vet a call as she may be painful and need some additional medication to help with this. For tonight, you can sit and snuggle with her if she seems to want this, or leave her alone if she doesn't want to be touched. Make sure she has food and water available if she wants it. Monitor for any bleeding from the incision site, pale gums, or increased weakness or acting less responsive, as these could indicate a more serious problem that needs an ER visit.

This sounds like a neurological problem. It can be from and injury, epilepsy or an infection. You can put a video on YouTube and resend this question with the link. Also more of a description.
