Why won't my dog's ear stop bleeding from head shaking after surgery?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Try holding pressure agains the area with a clean dry paper towel for 3 mins. You can also hold a little ice agains the area to help constrict the blood vessels. If it is still bleeding even after a couple tries and Riley is still bleeding where it is coming out very quickly or is too frequently to count, Riley may need to be taken to an emergency clinic to help stop the bleeding. Poor Snopy! Ear wounds are never fun to deal with. I would recommend taking Snopy to your vet for evaluation. He may simply have a cut or abrasion on his ear that is not healing, however they can also evaluate to see if he has a growth or similar lesion that is continuing to bleed. If it IS a mass or growth it is important to have it addressed as soon as possible as ear surgery can be quite difficult. Your vet may recommend a special bandage such as the ‘No Flap Ear Wrap’ to help the area heal. Every time he shakes his head at the moment he is going to disrupt the healing process. I’m sorry I don’t know what you mean by ‘his body is maggotted’. If you are implying he is infested with maggots then he needs to be seen by a vet right away to have this issue addressed.

It's not an emergency likely but it may need to be addressed. For bleeding lesions, apply firm pressure for 10-15 minutes. You can use hydrogen perxoide to clean the area one time but don;t use it more than that because it can impede healing. After that, use soap and water to clean the ear if it gets dirty but otherwise leave it alone. You need to prevent Reese from shaking her head and traumatizing the ear. Sometimes and elizabethan collar can help. You can keep the ear clean and dry. Keep the ear protected from trauma. You can give Reese a supplement for omega 3 fatty acids for pets to help with inflammation. You can apply a tiny dab of organic coconut oil to the lesion 1-2 times a day and rub it in well. If the lesion is not improving within 5 days, if it starts looking worse or if it will not stop bleeding after 15 minutes, have Reese examined by the veterinarian. It's probably best to leave it alone for now. Ears tend to bleed a lot when they get cut, but it eventually stops and they don't bleed enough to be dangerous - unless he happens to have a clotting disorder. The more you wipe at the ear or agitate it, the more it will bleed. Also, hydrogen peroxide and other strong antiseptics can cause more damage than good, so it's best not to apply this to the wound. You can try cleaning the wound in 12 hours or so after the bleeding has stopped and he hopefully calms down. The first thing you should do is flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Cruise to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Infection is the biggest concern with these wounds; so after flushing, it's best to apply an antibacterial cream to the wound. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound 1-2 times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. If the ear starts to swell or have pus oozing from the wound, then I'd recommend he goes to the vet for treatment. Otherwise, the wound should heal fine over the next 2-3 weeks. I hope that helps and Cruise gets better soon.

It is possible that she caused it herself by scratching, but if you did not observe it happening, she could have traumatized it on something else, or been wounded by another animal. Based on your description of the wound, I recommend bringing her to your local veterinarian to have her evaluated. At the very least, the wound likely needs to be cleaned and flushed with a sterile solution to prevent infection. Depending on how deep or infected the wound is, it may require more extensive management such as surgical closure of the wound, or bandages. Willow likely also needs an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent her from further traumatizing the wound. Unfortunately, dogs like to scratch at their ears and can make it very hard for wounds to heal. If the wound is superficial and Willow is otherwise healthy, you may be able to apply compression to the wound to get it to stop bleeding, and monitor it closely at home for signs of infection (redness, swelling, yellow-green discharge, foul odor). If you see any of these signs, Willow should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. Just a reminder, NEVER give dogs any pain medications that are intended for humans, as they can be lethally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful!

This looks like an aural hematoma which is where blood from a capillary bursts and fills up the est between the two layers are cartilage. You can purchase a "no flap ear wrap" online to help with the flapping of the ears. Most commonly this problem needs a procedure done by a vet to allow the blood to drain while the two layers of cartilage re-adhere to one another. Also there is likely an ear infection that caused the shaking of the head to begin with that will likely need to be treated. If the blood is not drained the ear flap will eventually scar down and become a "cauliflower" ear which won't cause too many problems except that it isn't very cosmetic and sometimes they can be more prone to skin infections in the crevices of the cauliflower ear so this isn't recommended. Hello there! It sounds like Roxie needs to revisit the vet before she starts another hematoma. If she's flapping her head and holding hear ear to one side, there may be an infection brewing way down in her ear where you might not be able to see it. It's very easy for dogs with floppy ears to shake and break those little blood vessels in the pinna (flap), which will cause a new hematoma quickly - sometimes in just a few hours. Dogs that have had hematomas in the past are more susceptible to them, so Roxie is definitely at risk. Even a call to the vet's office can give you some insight into what to do next, but I can almost guarantee that they'll want to take a look way down in that ear to see if she's got a new infection brewing.
