Why is my dog still shaking after his first bath? Should I worry?

Shaking is often a sign of pain. Check BJ over to make sure he's not injured. Please don't give him human pain medication. It doesn't sound like the shaking is from the bug you saw and giving a bath should have gotten rid of it. If all looks normal and he's eating and drinking then keep him quiet and hopefully he'll be back to normal soon. If he continues to shake and he's not eating or feeling well definitely take him to your veterinarian right away.

If Asher is eating well and still playing actively now and then in a 24 hour period, I’m not very worried. It’s possible he tweaked something during the frantic time in the shower. I’d watch him for the next 24 hours and if he’s not back to his normal crazy self (or of course if he is worse in any way), head in to the vet. Best of luck to you and Asher!

I'm a bit confused as to whether you are talking about a cat or a dog. The post states dog but for pet's info it says cat...... A dog that shakes while getting bathed is likely nervous or scared. It is not usually from being cold which is what most people think. Be sure to use warm water when bathing. Ignore the shivering. It is not anything to be worried about. Best wishes!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Bear is just a little on edge from his itchy skin, unusual bath, and (I’m guessing) recent vet visit. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Keep doing your daily walks and training reinforcement and give him a few days. Even if this anxiety persists, it can often be managed with extra exercise and training in dogs of this age and breed. Best wishes to you and Bear!

I’m sorry to hear about your dog. It is possible that his former owners treatment of bath time may have given him anxiety about it. It sounds like you’re doing everything right but if his anxiety is still severe, talk to your veterinarian about an occasional use anti-anxiety medication which can help tremendously with feeling more relaxed at bath time. This behavior can be normal for him or it could be a symptom of underlying stress and/or anxiety. Use one that has some science behind it. I would use Solliquin or Zylkene. Dogs can warm up pretty quickly, so if he is back to acting normally, I would not be concerned. You can monitor for signs of continued shivering, lethargy, decreased appetite. But if you don't see any of these, he should be OK. I hope this is helpful!
