My puppy has seizures. How often? Can a diaper help with accidents?

I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.

It is not a good idea to get this puppy. When puppies are this young and already having seizures, usually it is usually due to an underlying congenital problem like with the brain, liver, kidneys, etc. It is probably not just epilepsy.

Kiku needs to go to the vet ASAP for general bloodwork and an exam. At this age, I would be most concerned about an organ issue (such as a liver shunt) or a congenital neruologic issue, or even a toxin causing seizures. He's too young for epilepsy. There are many different medications to treat seizures, but we'd need to rule out treatable causes first. With this frequency of seizures he definitely risks causing brain damage if this keeps up. Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that Luna is having this problem. There are many different things that can cause seizures - it's certainly possible that she may have epilepsy, but other possible causes would include a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, a central nervous system problem such as meningitis or a brain tumor, or exposure to some type of toxin. Bloody diarrhea is not a sign of epilepsy and is not normally associated with seizures in general, so this may be a separate problem. I would recommend taking Luna to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can do a complete neurologic exam and may also recommend blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing her seizures. If she does have epilepsy, your veterinarian can prescribe medication to help control her seizures.

The most common symptoms of a full-blown seizure in older dogs include drooling, violent muscle spasms, running movements of his legs, loss of bladder and bowel control and possible vomiting. So the incontinence may be part of the seizure. But anyway in a situation like this you NEED to get your dog to your vet as quickly as you can, to stop seizure if persistent or any more seizures and start diagnosis of the underlying cause The leading causes of seizures in older dogs changes and while epilepsy is the leading cause of seizures in younger dogs (under 6 years old), in senior dogs the leading causes include brain tumors, liver or kidney disease, trauma, poisoning, under active thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Thnk you for submitting your question regarding Yuki. I recommend that sees a veterinarian right away. In the meantime, rub some karo or maple syrup on her gums. Puppies can have seizures if their blood sugar drops too low. She needs immediate care. Good luck!
