What to know before adopting an 8-week-old puppy who had a seizure?

I'd be very concerned that these seizures are caused by a severe medical problem like a liver shunt. Epilepsy is usually in older dogs, and seizures are rare in puppies. I would have this puppy checked out by a vet before adopting it.

Kiku needs to go to the vet ASAP for general bloodwork and an exam. At this age, I would be most concerned about an organ issue (such as a liver shunt) or a congenital neruologic issue, or even a toxin causing seizures. He's too young for epilepsy. There are many different medications to treat seizures, but we'd need to rule out treatable causes first. With this frequency of seizures he definitely risks causing brain damage if this keeps up. Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Seizures can be detrimental to a dog's health and this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

It would certainly be very nice of you to adopt two special needs dogs. You should however be prepared to have some medical expenses in the future if you do intend on doing something like this. My suspicion is that the chihuahua's knee cap is not actually missing but simply sliding in and out of place which is known as a luxating patella, an extremely common condition in very small breeds of dog. Depending on the severity of the luxation it might just be left alone or could potentially require surgical procedure to fix it at some point. IN terms of bleeding from the ears I am not aware of any sort of genetic abnormality that would cause this sort of clinical sign but that is not to say that it's not possible. In general genetic abnormalities can certainly happen in multiples but there is no guarantee either way.

I would be concerned about purchasing the puppy with such a history, there is a possibility it may be an indication of additions issues such as swallowing difficulties, weakened immune system or other internal causes, especially if this pup is smaller than the siblings

At 7 months of age, I recommend a visit to your veterinarian to check bloodwork and make sure nothing abnormal is found. Idiopathic epilepsy, or seizures for an unknown reason, can develop at this age, but we want to make sure we aren't missing anything else. This might be the only seizure Jerry ever has, or there could be more. Write down the information about this event, and mark it on the calendar so you remember exactly when it happened. If there are more, then you veterinarian will need to take steps to properly diagnose and treat the condition.

I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.
