My puppy had a seizure, won't eat, and has soft stool. Is it serious?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppy. I recommend placing some karo or maple syrup on her gums. Puppies can experience low blood sugar which will cause weakness. Then I recommend seeking emergency veterinary care right away. Her symptoms are worrisome and it is important to determine the cause so she can be treated. I hope this information helps.

I would notify your vet that she had a possible seizure first. Then I would try to make sure she has a consistent source of food or sugar to keep her glucose levels steady, in case that was the cause for her seizure. If you see the event happen again then it's best to record it so that your vet can see what is happening and classify the event correctly. Continue to give her fluids and other medicaitons as instructed by your veterinarian, unless possible seizure can be a side effect of one of her medicaitons (i.e. metronidazole). If your puppy is a small or you breed dog then she is at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so it's important to give her nutrical, Karo syrup or honey (1 tsp) every 4-6 hrs if she hasn't gained her appetite back yet. Once she starts to eat on her own then discuss with your vet how often she should get the sugar source, if at all. I hope that your pup survives her CPV infection. Best wishes and take care.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would give a little Karo syrup on her gums and see if she will eat some dog food for you. See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her now as well and see if there is anything else underlying predisposing her to these episodes. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. The seizure may have been from a low blood glucose ( sugar ) level. Make sure Malone eats 3 good meals a day & if he skips a meal, have some Karo Syrup or Nutrical ( available at all pet stores ) on hand & give him 1/2 - 1 teaspoon to give him a sugar boost. If he continues to have seizures, even after eating well & on a regular basis, please have him evaluated for other causes of seizures. I hope he is doing better soon. I'm so sorry Katana is so sick! Unfortunately there is nothing you can do at home to help Katana so she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Sometimes low blood sugar can cause seizures so you can put honey on Katana's gums, but you do need take her to see a veterinarian immediately. Many things including toxin exposure can cause seizures and can be life threatening so again, it is very important to have Katana examined by a veterinarian. Hello. This is unfortunate for you and your puppy. Sometimes, very small toy breed puppies can not regulate their blood sugar and become hypoglycemic, have seizures and neurological issues. If your vet has not monitored his blood glucose- that needs to be done. This can be treated with a high caloric supplement called NutriCal that can be given throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. The other thing to test for is a liver shunt. This is a congenital malformation of blood vessels that go to and from the liver. If your puppy has a shunt, their liver is usually smaller than normal and cannot perform its normal functions. This can cause toxins to build up and that causes seizures. This disorder can sometimes be corrected with surgery or managed with special diets and medication. If your veterinarian is uncomfortable moving forward , ask to be referred to an internal medicine specialist or even just another general practitioner with more experience with these issues. Kiku needs to go to the vet ASAP for general bloodwork and an exam. At this age, I would be most concerned about an organ issue (such as a liver shunt) or a congenital neruologic issue, or even a toxin causing seizures. He's too young for epilepsy. There are many different medications to treat seizures, but we'd need to rule out treatable causes first. With this frequency of seizures he definitely risks causing brain damage if this keeps up.
