My puppy has cluster seizures. What should I do and feed him?

Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Seizures can be detrimental to a dog's health and this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

You can try rubbing a small amount of karo syrup on Bruno's gums in case the seizure if from low blood sugar, but he needs immediate medical attention even if the karo seems to help. Seizures in young puppies can be from low blood sugar, congenital liver disease, toxin or other disease. It is important to get medical attention asap as uncontrolled seizures could be fatal.

Hello. This is unfortunate for you and your puppy. Sometimes, very small toy breed puppies can not regulate their blood sugar and become hypoglycemic, have seizures and neurological issues. If your vet has not monitored his blood glucose- that needs to be done. This can be treated with a high caloric supplement called NutriCal that can be given throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. The other thing to test for is a liver shunt. This is a congenital malformation of blood vessels that go to and from the liver. If your puppy has a shunt, their liver is usually smaller than normal and cannot perform its normal functions. This can cause toxins to build up and that causes seizures. This disorder can sometimes be corrected with surgery or managed with special diets and medication. If your veterinarian is uncomfortable moving forward , ask to be referred to an internal medicine specialist or even just another general practitioner with more experience with these issues. I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.

At 7 months of age, I recommend a visit to your veterinarian to check bloodwork and make sure nothing abnormal is found. Idiopathic epilepsy, or seizures for an unknown reason, can develop at this age, but we want to make sure we aren't missing anything else. This might be the only seizure Jerry ever has, or there could be more. Write down the information about this event, and mark it on the calendar so you remember exactly when it happened. If there are more, then you veterinarian will need to take steps to properly diagnose and treat the condition.

Two seizures in a 24 hour period are considered "cluster seizures," which generally require anti-epileptic (anti-seizure) medications. The post-ictal (after seizure) period can last for many hours, or even a day, and can cause many subtle behavioral changes and could even affect Blue's appetite. At this point, Blue should be examined by her vet. The vet will perform a neurologic exam and full physical exam, and may recommend blood work. Based on these results, medications may be prescribed. Until you go to the vet, try tempting Blue with canned dog food, meat-based baby food, or boiled white meat chicken and rice. I hope that she's feeling better soon!
