My senior dog had a seizure and is now incontinent. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Buella. Seizure in older dogs are always concerning for some form of brain disease. Unfortunately, a brain tumor is something that is highly considered and one thing to rule out. Other potential causes include having inflammation of her brain or an infection. Less likely causes include severe liver disease or low glucose. All of these causes however would require that your vet obtains bloodwork and potentially an MRI to examine her brain and look for any tumors. If she continues to have these episodes, she should be seen by her veterinarian soon. Alternatively, you may be able to start anti-seizure medications and see if this helps control her episodes as long as she is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting like her normal self. Since Cali was having neurologically abnormal repeated behavior, seemed unaware of your presence, and lost control of her bladder, it seems likely that she had a seizure. One of the most common causes of seizures in a 3 year old dog is epilepsy, but other possibilities include liver diseases (portosystemic shunts), toxin exposure, or brain tumors. If another episode occurs, take a video to show to her vet. There is no need to rush to a vet after a one time occurrence, as she will likely not be started on any seizure control medications. However, should Cali have another seizure within a 24 hour period, she should go to an ER vet because this would be considered a "cluster seizure".

Over time, the dog will learn that this feeling precedes a seizure. This could be what is happening with the incontinence you mentioned. The goal of anti-seizure drugs is not to completely eliminate all seizures, but to decrease them to an acceptable level. You may consider seeing a neurologist if you have not done so already. If not, you may be able to increase the dose of some of her medications or to try a different combination of drugs to achieve better control. There is also a prescription diet available that works along with anti-seizure drugs. It is called Neurocare from Purina Veterinary Diets. This may be an option for her as well. Sorry to hear about Munnu. The lab report you have attached does not provide any insight into the cause of his seizure activity. Unfortunately, a 12 year old dog with no previous history of seizures is most likely the result of a brain tumor or tumor elsewhere in the nervous system (this is of course in the absence of a known traumatic event to the head or neck). Other less likely causes would include certain infectious or inflammatory conditions, or extremely late onset epilepsy. I would recommend getting Munnu onto anticonvulsive drugs right away, and having his stabilized at your veterinarian if the seizures continue with regularity.

It sounds like Danika has a seizure, and it a dog her age, that can have very serious causes. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible. If she seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near her mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

It sounds like seizure activity to me. Not all seizures are grand mal where the dog falls over and starts paddling. I suggest you get him back to the vet for a follow-up and discuss putting him on some anti-seizure medication. Occasionally severe pain can cause these types of symptoms. It is possible that the gallstones may be causing him some random pain. Most often though, gallstones do not cause any problems in dogs like they do in people. Again, talk to your vet about your options.

Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes.
