My dog seized after amoxicillin. Vets closed, what should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 6.5 lbs

My dog just collapsed and had a seizure immediately after orally ingesting canine-formulated amoxicillin trihydrate; all nearby veterinarian offices are closed...what should I do right now?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. I found one clinic in your area that is open for emergencies that you can get Rusty in to be seen.

I would recommend having him seen tonight if possible so that he does not have another seizure and you can get him treated sooner rather than later as there is nothing at home that you can give him to stop a seizure other than covering his eyes and waiting for the seizure to stop. I’m sorry to hear about Rusty. Seizures can be terribly scary!!

If it was truly IMMEDIATLEY after (like less than 5 minutes), it probably is NOT the medication itself. Though if there was some struggling with you to get it down him, that could possibly trigger a seizure.

If we’re talking more like 30-60 mins after the pill, then perhaps it could be related to the medication itself (though that would be very rare for that medication).

Often, for first time seizures, we offer some bloodwork to rule out treatable causes (liver disease, certain fungal and tick borne disease) and then do nothing but watch.

Dogs can have one seizure and not have one again ( we don’t know why).

However, if you see the following, you need to head to your nearest 24 hour emergency clinic.

1) another seizure within 24 hours

2) active seizuring lasting longer than 2 minutes

3) any two seizures that are “back to back”.

I highly recommend that you have Ice evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. You could consider an emergency veterinarian that is open at this time. If there are no emergency veterinarians open in your area, make sure to take him as soon as they are. This is not something that can really be managed at home. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start him on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My dog is seizing, vets are closed. What should I do right now?

Oh My! Poor Pistol! It sounds like he got over heated. I would check his temperature rectally. If it is greater than 104 then I would put some alcohol on his pads and tips of his ears and continue the fan. Unfortunately, dogs that over heat will sometimes then begin to get really cold. If his temperature is less that 99 then I would turn off the fan and wrap him in some warm towels and check his temperature regularly. I am afraid that he has a brain injury due to the incident. This is a true emergency. From looking around your area of Livingston, TX, it looks like the closest emergency clinic is about an hour away. I would STRONGLY encourage to load him up and take him there for the best chance of survival. He likely needs some IV fluids and possible meds to help with brain swelling and to control the seizures. When antibiotics are ingested in toxic amounts, it can result in mild to severe signs ranging from gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, discolored teeth), metabolic signs (e.g., skin lesions, liver failure, kidney failure, etc.) to central nervous system signs (e.g., tremors, seizures, death). I would advise contacting your local emergency vet hospital or contact Poison Control https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control Sorry this happened with your pet. Another option would be to contact the drug manufacturer directly if that information can be learned. I'm hoping for a positive outcome with your kitty!!

My 9-year-old dog had his first seizure. Is Amoxitab the cause?

Amoxitab is a mild form of penicillin so as long as it was the right dose for Lucky and he has no history of allergy I don't think it was related. Seizures in older dogs that have never had epilepsy usually indicate an underlying condition such as a liver problem or brain issue. Keep a really close eye and if he goes into another seizure I would go to your vet as an emergency, otherwise make a routine appointment to have a general health check.

My dog is having multiple seizures. What should I do right now?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Olaf! The food change is very unlikely to be the cause of his seizures. The most likely cause is epilepsy. If Olaf is having 2-3 or more seizures in a 24 hour period (clustering) that is an emergency and he should be hospitalized and started on anti-seizure medication. If there isn't a 24 hour emergency hospital in your area then you need to have him see first thing in the morning when your vet opens. I hope this helps and I wish Olaf the very best!

My senior dog is throwing up, seizing, aggressive. How to see a vet?

I would contact the veterinarian again and ask if they can provide you with a sedative / anti-anxiety medication prior to coming in and then have you muzzle her prior to bringing her in. Medications such as Trazodone and amitriptyline together can help with the anxiety. She really needs to be seen by a veterinarian and have her blood tested to see if there are any abnormal systemic changes that could be causing the symptoms you are describing. With her age, I am concerned about something systemic that could be abnormal or cancer. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
