My dog is seizing, vets are closed. What should I do right now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

My terrier got stuck under my bed last night to the point of suffocating to death. When I found him he was barely breathing and he was stiff. He is now having small 30 second seizures every 30 minutes or so. He twitches off and on between them. I have a fan blowing on him to help cool him down and I gave him 1ml of melatonin. All the vets are closed until tuesday. I don't know what to do for him or if he is going to die. Please help

Oh My! Poor Pistol! It sounds like he got over heated. I would check his temperature rectally. If it is greater than 104 then I would put some alcohol on his pads and tips of his ears and continue the fan. Unfortunately, dogs that over heat will sometimes then begin to get really cold. If his temperature is less that 99 then I would turn off the fan and wrap him in some warm towels and check his temperature regularly. I am afraid that he has a brain injury due to the incident. This is a true emergency. From looking around your area of Livingston, TX, it looks like the closest emergency clinic is about an hour away. I would STRONGLY encourage to load him up and take him there for the best chance of survival. He likely needs some IV fluids and possible meds to help with brain swelling and to control the seizures. I have attached a link that make give you some options on different emergency vet clinics near your. I hope this helps and Pistol recovers from this very scary and tragic accident.

Dog heat stroke: cooled, but unresponsive & vomiting. No vet!

Hi, heat stroke is a very serious condition that requires a vet's intervention. he needs fluids to help cool him. If you are unable to find a vet to take him to, you can cool him down by using cool water. Get a thermometer and take his temperature by inserting it into his rectum about one inch. The normal temperature is 99.5-102.5. You don't want to cool him down too quickly or he can go into shock so it is important not to use ice or cold water. IF his temperature is still elevated, you can soak towels in cool water and drape them over him. If he can swallow, spoon or syringe cool water into his mouth. Keep him comfortable and cool and stop cooling measure when his temperature reaches 101, so you don't make him too cold. It is important to take him to a vet as soon as possible because heat stroke can have long lasting effects that can be deadly. He will need fluids and antibiotics to help his GI system recover from shock. Vets should be open first thing in the morning. Good luck!

My dog is seizing late at night. What should I do without a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have Ice evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. You could consider an emergency veterinarian that is open at this time. If there are no emergency veterinarians open in your area, make sure to take him as soon as they are. This is not something that can really be managed at home. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start him on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My dog seized after amoxicillin. Vets closed, what should I do?

My dog had a seizure. What to do when I can't get to an emergency vet?

Poor Dix! Don't panic.... if you can't make it to a veterinarian it's ok. What a vet can do is to help relax Dix with injectable intravenous medications like Valium, but there is no way to prevent the brain activity that causes seizures in the first place. If you can schedule an appointment with a vet in the near future for a basic exam and bloodwork then do so to rule out any metabolic disease like liver problems. Then your vet can decide if an anti-epileptic medication like phenobarbital will help stop future seizures. Hope that helps!

My dog keeps having short seizures. Is this a vet emergency?

Poor Dex. Any seizure should be checked out by a vet, as they are not normal. I would get him an appointment to get this checked out as soon as you can. If he seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near his mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor him at all times during the seizure to ensure that he cannot hurt himself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately I hope this helps!
