My 9-year-old dog had his first seizure. Is Amoxitab the cause?

Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes. You can also inquire with your vet about a diet called Purina Neurocare that has helped many dogs with seizures/epilepsy. Good luck!

( http://emergencyvetpugetsound.com/ ) I would recommend having him seen tonight if possible so that he does not have another seizure and you can get him treated sooner rather than later as there is nothing at home that you can give him to stop a seizure other than covering his eyes and waiting for the seizure to stop. This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I recommend having Sami seen by her vet who can perform bloodwork and x-rays and prescribe anticonvulsant medications if the seizures continue. I recommend bringing a video of the episode if you are able to, as his will be really helpful in determining if the episode was truly a seizure. I am sorry that Scarlet is having seizures. When dogs have chronic ear infections they can become very difficult to treat and we are resorted to using strong antibiotics like Amikacin. However Amikacin injections can cause issues with kidney function and has to be monitored closely. I have used Amikacin for ear infection and applied topically I have never seen a patient have seizures. With an 11 year old dog I would recommend full blood work, x-rays and possible a CT/MRI to rule out disease in the brain or vestibular region that might be causing the seizures. IT is possible the ear infection is secondary to something going on more severe. I hope scarlet makes a speedy recovery

I'm so sorry to hear that Lilly has developed seizures. Seizures in dogs can be fatal if not treated. There are a huge number of newer anti-convulsant drugs that are much safer than some of the older ones (and even a new diet). I always tell people that old age is not a disease. Seizures and their side effects are much more likely to kill Lilly than any of the medications that your vet might prescribe. I think it is worth having your vet examine her and discuss the treatment options. Hopefully your vet can put your parents' minds at ease about the medication and make Lilly feel better. It is unlikely that the seizures were caused by the Excedrin. We do not know why young dogs get seizures it is a so-called idiopathic disorder. It is likely that your dog will need to take phenobarbital for a long time. Your vet may decide after a while to try out whether a lower phenobarbital level is sufficient to control the seizures. A low SDMA is normal for puppies.

At 7 months of age, I recommend a visit to your veterinarian to check bloodwork and make sure nothing abnormal is found. Idiopathic epilepsy, or seizures for an unknown reason, can develop at this age, but we want to make sure we aren't missing anything else. This might be the only seizure Jerry ever has, or there could be more. Write down the information about this event, and mark it on the calendar so you remember exactly when it happened. If there are more, then you veterinarian will need to take steps to properly diagnose and treat the condition.
