My senior dog is throwing up, seizing, aggressive. How to see a vet?

My 16 year old dog keeps throwing up and having seizures and im not to sure why. She also keeps trying to attack me and passing out for no real reason. Ive tried to take her to the vets but they say that she is far too aggressive and disruptive. Im very confused and are not sure what to do with her. She has also lost 10lb since last week and will only eat chicken in small amounts and will urinate only around 2 times a day and Poo around 1 times a day. Please give me some advice!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would contact the veterinarian again and ask if they can provide you with a sedative / anti-anxiety medication prior to coming in and then have you muzzle her prior to bringing her in. Medications such as Trazodone and amitriptyline together can help with the anxiety. She really needs to be seen by a veterinarian and have her blood tested to see if there are any abnormal systemic changes that could be causing the symptoms you are describing. With her age, I am concerned about something systemic that could be abnormal or cancer. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.     Hello,

    I would recommend talking to your vet about getting Snowden an anti-anxiety medication to take before future exams and grooms. A couple of common medications used for this purpose are Trazodone and Gabapentin.

    Training her to wear a basket muzzle may be helpful as well. The basket muzzle type allows them to eat, drink, and pant comfortably while making it very difficult for her to successfully bite anyone.

    Some veterinarians do house calls as well, and this may be helpful if leaving the house is part of her fear.

    As vets, we encounter many fearful and hurting pets. If you call and explain the situation, they will likely be able to guide you on getting her an appropriate anti-anxiety medication dose and seeing her for a consult.

My advice is to have Snoopy evaluated with her veterinarian very soon so she can be examined and tested for organ issues, gastrointestinal obstruction, and/or infection that could be underlying. She may need blood work and x-rays or other diagnostic tests to help understand what is causing her symptoms.

My senior dog is having multiple seizures. Do I need an emergency vet?
An 11 year old dog suddenly having seizures activity is very concerning. Especially if they are clustering like you describe. There are several possible causes such as low blood glucose from xylitol ingestion, a tumor on the pancreas releasing too much insulin, or something even more concerning such as a brain tumor. I would highly encourage you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It was unclear to if you were previously at the emergency clinic due to this issue or something else. However, if it was due to this then I would call the veterinarian and ask if you can have some diazepam to give this evening to see if you can keep her seizure free until tomorrow. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Minnie! She is SO cute! It sounds as though Minnie is very painful! I think it is great you already have an appointment with your Vet because any sudden behavioral change and yelping in pain warrants that! My guess is that she has neck or back pain though the vomiting doesn't fit with that. She could have eaten something that is now stuck causing belly pain or she could have pancreatitis, which is also very painful. After your Vet examines her they will likely want to do blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Minnie the very best!

I would recommend taking Basil to see a veterinarian. Without a complete physical examination it is very difficult to say if it is time for Basil. The veterinarian can discuss with your friend if treatment or diagnostics is something that would help Basil or if something worse is going on with her that cannot be treated. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear about Booda, she sounds very sick. Since she is vomiting, acting lethargic, not eating and having neurological signs, I would have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Especially in an older Golden, cancer is a top differential for the cause of her clinical signs. Your veterinarian will want to do a complete physical exam, along with bloodwork and/or x-rays to look for evidence of disease. Because she is coughing, I'm afraid she may have cancer in her lungs, or less likely something like pneumonia. Unfortunately, you may have to consider thinking about her quality of life. Vomiting, coughing, not eating and being unresponsive to stimuli are not indicative of a good quality of life. I hope this is helpful, and I'm very sorry to hear about Booda.

It could be the meloxicam is no longer enough for her pain, and she may need an additional pain medication or an increase in dosage. She does sound painful to me. My senior dog is falling, lethargic, disoriented. Is it a seizure?
Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The falling/lethargy episode you described may have been a seizure. This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I recommend having Sami seen by her vet who can perform bloodwork and x-rays and prescribe anticonvulsant medications if the seizures continue. I recommend bringing a video of the episode if you are able to, as his will be really helpful in determining if the episode was truly a seizure.
