My cat ate Clavamox pills, vet is closed. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I think my cat got into Clavamox and ate 5 pills of 62.5 mg.... Vet is closed until tommorow

When antibiotics are ingested in toxic amounts, it can result in mild to severe signs ranging from gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, discolored teeth), metabolic signs (e.g., skin lesions, liver failure, kidney failure, etc.) to central nervous system signs (e.g., tremors, seizures, death).

I would advise contacting your local emergency vet hospital or contact Poison Control https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control

Sorry this happened with your pet. Another option would be to contact the drug manufacturer directly if that information can be learned. I'm hoping for a positive outcome with your kitty!!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Overdosing of antibiotics is usually not a huge deal. It can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea. I would monitor for these signs. I do recommend calling your local emergency clinic (or posting another question) including which antibiotic (Amoxyclav?, Doxycycline?, etc.), as this might change the answer and inducing vomiting might be recommended. Otherwise, just monitor for signs of an upset stomach and skip the next dose. Best of luck with Sumi!

My cat ate Clonazepam and is acting weird. Is it an emergency?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Oh no, poor Luna. Even if she only ingested 6mg, that's double the highest recommended dose for a cat her weight. Too much clonazepam can lower the blood pressure, leading to weakness or collapse. In a senior cat, low blood pressure can be very serious. I'm not sure why you have no way of getting her to a vet, but she does need to see one immediately to make sure everything is ok. I would see if you could have a friend or family member take you into the vet, or call a cab or Uber to have her seen now. Best of luck.

My cat is vomiting and has diarrhea on Clavamox. Should I stop?

I would contact his veterinarian before discontinuing the medication. Be sure that Oliver has a meal before giving the medication as antibiotics can cause vomiting on an empty stomach. If he continues to have vomiting or diarrhea be sure to let his vet know and they may prescribe a different medication or something to give with the clavamox to help settle his stomach. You can get probiotics for cats at many pet stores, it may be worth starting him on this while he is on antibiotics. I hope Oliver is better soon. Is it okay my vet cut & crushed my cat's Clavamox pills for storage?

Yes, long term storage out of the foil would be a problem but for the short course of treatment they should be fine. They now have clavamox in chewable tablets that are easy to break and most pets love the taste. My cat is throwing up and won't eat after finishing Clavamox.

Peaches is adorable! I would recommend calling your veterinarian. I have seen cases where they got an upset stomach the last day or two on the antibiotics and maybe now since she is no longer going to be taking them she will feel much better. My cat ate amoxicillin by mistake. Will he overdose or be okay?

I would not be overly concerned, although the recommended dose is 5-10mg/lb (and an 8lb cat would have consumed approx 15mg/lb) it does have a wide safety margin and overdose symptoms are very rare. I would expect some mild gastrointestinal upset and a probiotic would be helpful to reduce the impact on the natural gut balance

My kitten ate a Coumadin pill. Is this an emergency for my pet?

Warfarin (Coumdain) usage in cats is highly problematic and can cause massive internal bleeding. I would highly recommend taking your pet to your local vet right away for monitoring and treatment (if needed). I know it may be hard to find a vet open on today.
