Dog scratching, tremors after Advantix. When to see the vet?

You are correct Stuart is showing signs of side effects from Advantix, which can last a bit. Once the product has been absorbed by the skin, you have to wait for the active ingredient to be eliminated from the body before the side effects stop. That's not to say that nothing can be done, and I do recommend taking him into the vet as he sounds uncomfortable. There may be medication the vet can prescribe to help with his itchiness. He may have an adverse skin reaction to the Advantix. This happens sometime and should subside within a few days. You should really apply the spot-on onto the skin between the shoulder blades after parting the hair. The skin is less sensitive there (thicker), Should the spot where you applied it get raw, you need to have it examined by your veterinarian.

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.

Advantage generally has an alcohol base to it and some dogs are more sensitive to this, they may begin itching or rubbing after application. I would recommend continuing to monitor Lily for the next 24 hours to see if the itching improves or resolves. If her symptoms continue I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian to look for other possible causes of her itching such as skin infection. Hope this helps, good luck!

If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

It has been known to cause local skin irritation, but the itching could mean that it is working if she had fleas on her. I would see if there is a number on the package to call for advice. If the itching continues into tomorrow or if she's actually injuring herself with the scratching or starts having other symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, etc., get her seen by your vet as soon as possible.

Topical products can take a few hours to absorb into the skin. If applied more to the fur than skin it may take a bit longer. Ideally I would leash walk them until the area appears dry to look and touch to prevent them from rubbing it off, or getting dirt caked in the application spot.
