Is my dog reacting to Advantix applied near tail? Biting & can't walk.

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.

Usually that skin sensitivity is transient and isolated to where you applied the advantix. As long as he is otherwise acting normally, eating and drinking. I think it's safe to wait another day. If he is depressed, not eating or has lesions on his skin like scabs or scratches you should take him into a vet.

If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

There is a possibility that he is irritated from flea bites at his tail and/or from the spot on. It is a well-known side effect that spot-ons can cause an itch, hair loss, irritation, but usually that irritation is gone within a few hours. Do not let him bite or lick or scratch the application location. You can put a loose t-shirt on him covering up the location or put on an e-collar. If the irritation has not subsided by tomorrow, or if Boy boy develops a wound , he will need to be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. In the meantime do not put cream or ointment onto the location where you applied the flea treatment.

You are correct Stuart is showing signs of side effects from Advantix, which can last a bit. Once the product has been absorbed by the skin, you have to wait for the active ingredient to be eliminated from the body before the side effects stop. That's not to say that nothing can be done, and I do recommend taking him into the vet as he sounds uncomfortable. There may be medication the vet can prescribe to help with his itchiness. It would be okay to use something like Frontline spray along with Advantix but I would not use any other spray as it could cause toxicity. If you are still seeing live fleas you could ask your veterinarian about a medication to quickly kill the adults like Capstar. If there are scabs on Simon's behind he may have flea dermatitis and need antibiotics and/or a corticosteroid.

Topical products can take a few hours to absorb into the skin. If applied more to the fur than skin it may take a bit longer. Ideally I would leash walk them until the area appears dry to look and touch to prevent them from rubbing it off, or getting dirt caked in the application spot.
