Why is my puppy still itching 24 hours after Advantage application?

Hi, I applied advantage to my puppy 24 hours ago, I can’t see any fleas but she’s still itching

Hello, thank you for your question about Lily.

It is possible that Lily's itching could be due to the Advantage product. Advantage generally has an alcohol base to it and some dogs are more sensitive to this, they may begin itching or rubbing after application. I would recommend continuing to monitor Lily for the next 24 hours to see if the itching improves or resolves. If her symptoms continue I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian to look for other possible causes of her itching such as skin infection.

You are correct Stuart is showing signs of side effects from Advantix, which can last a bit. Once the product has been absorbed by the skin, you have to wait for the active ingredient to be eliminated from the body before the side effects stop. If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

Usually that skin sensitivity is transient and isolated to where you applied the advantix. As long as he is otherwise acting normally, eating and drinking. I think it's safe to wait another day. If he is depressed, not eating or has lesions on his skin like scabs or scratches you should take him into a vet.

If he has a flea allergy than it will probably take a little bit of time for the itching to resolve. You could ask your vet for an anti-histamine or a corticosteroid to help relieve the itching. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, etc every month to prevent him from getting fleas again.

If you are noticing the itching is getting worse, I recommend to have her examined again. It's possible the medication is not working, it's possible she is having an allergic reaction, or it's possible she is itching due to something else. Your vet will have a better idea. I hope this helps.

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.

Probiotics, antihistamines and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets may help but they may not cure the condition. When you can, have Lily re-examined by the veterinarian. I recommend to conduct a proper food trial with a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet. This is the best and only way to accurately rule out food allergies as the cause of itching.
