Why is my dog scratching her irritated eye? Terramycin isn't working.

Ouch! This looks pretty irritated now. Ada could be having an allergic reaction to something, have chronic allergies that are starting for the season, or even have an issue with her immune system. I would recommend putting and e-collar (cone) on her tonight so that she can't rub her face and damage her eye and schedule an appointment for tomorrow with her regular vet. If she can't get comfortable this evening, or you don't have an e-collar, err on the side of caution and take her to an emergency clinic. I would recommend Diamond get a skin scraping and fungal culture from her veterinarian to rule out demodex mites as a cause and a fungal infection such as ringworm. Both can be treated with medications when diagnosed. Of course, it could be due to another cause such as allergies, but I would start with a skin scrape and culture first. Poor Pepper! Since it sounds like the antibiotics have not fixed the problem, I would recommend taking her back to the vet for a recheck exam. She may need some diagnostic testing, such as a skin scrape, to help diagnose what is causing the itching. Prescription medication like a short-term course of prednisone may also be needed to relieve the itching, in addition to treating whatever underlying problem is causing it. In the meantime, you can try using a topical hydrocortisone spray labeled for use in dogs (you can get this at most pet stores) to help relieve some of her discomfort until you can get her back in to see the vet.

I would be concerned that Gracie’s eye is itchy and she is rubbing it. This would cause the hairloss, redness and flaky skin. She may have an underlying allergy or an ulcer or scratch on her eye that is making it uncomfortable. The terramycin should be safe to use in and around the eye. If the problem doesn’t resolve in 2-3 day though, then I would recommend taking her in to be checked out by your veterinarian. I hope this helps. Optixcare is an eye lube, it won't treat an infection if an infection is present, which is likely the case. you didn't attach a photo to this question so it's hard for me to tell you what it could be, with eyes when in doubt i always recommend a physical vet visit as it must be examined in person. if an infection is present she will need an antibiotic eye drops, this is prescription only anyway so you will need to see a vet for that.

This is a sign of conjunctivitis. It may have developed from allergies or an eye irritant like smoke or pollen. You can wipe the discharge from the eyes with a warm wet cloth, and use sterile eye drops to flush out the discharge. Since the discharge is pussy Pepper has an infection that would clear up more quickly with prescription eye ointment. I recommend an exam with your veterinarian. They will examine the eyes and may stain them to check for a corneal injury and also will check to see if Pepper has normal tear production. Dogs with dry eyes can be more prone to conjunctivitis. Whenever there is an injury to the eye it is very important to have your vet examine the eye to see if there is an abrasion or possibly even a rupture of the cornea. If this is the case, treatment options are very different as is the prognosis of saving the eye. If the Terramycin was from a previous injury it may or may not be appropriate to use this time. Also, if it has been more than 30 days since it was last used it should be discarded. Since the eye is such a delicate structure, I strongly recommend you take Thumper to your veterinarian for an examination.
