My dog scratches non-stop and is in pain after vet visit. What now?

I can definitely see the small scabs and hairless on Peanut's back - those must be so uncomfortable. It can be frustrating to watch her scratch constantly and not have anything help. While the remedies you tried may help to decrease the symptoms, they do not provide a cure for what is actually causing Peanut to itch. I recommend that Peanut sees a vet who can figure out the underlying cause. Things like mites buried deep in the skin (which are not treated with flea sprays), food allergies, and chronic bacterial/fungal infections can be causing her issues. Your vet can take a sample from the skin to determine what is going on, as well as run some blood work to rule out underlying hormonal imbalances.

Betty looks generally red, so my biggest suspicion is that she has environmental allergies. However, mange should be ruled-out as a cause as well. The antibiotics are great for treating secondary bacterial infections of the skin, but will do nothing for the primary cause of the itching. She needs to go back to the vet and get the primary cause of the itching diagnosed and treated in order to keep this from getting worse. With appropriate treatment, we can often get this problem under control. For now, it's good to give a bath with just cool water once to twice a day. This will help to relieve the skin and possibly flush away any environmental alergins. I hope that helps and Betty gets better soon.

Charlie Ferreira looks like she may have a chronic bacterial/yeast skin infection +/-mange (from skin mites), likely secondary to chronic inflammation from environmental and/or food allergies. I recommend seeing a new vet perhaps, and starting her on an oral flea/tick preventative such as Simparica, NexGard, or Bravecto that also treats mange and will cover the cause of flea allergy dermatitis if she does have fleas. In addition, she may benefit from a 2 week course of an oral skin antibiotic such as Simplicef, a medicated antibacterial/antifungal shampoo such as Malaseb twice weekly for 1-2 months, and either a daily/year round allergy pill called Apoquel and/or a monthly allergy injection such as Cytopoint. Gradually switching her to an allergy diet such as Hills z/d or Royal Canin Ultamino at the same time or within a week symptoms don’t improve on NexGard, Simplicef, Malaseb and Apoquel will likely give you the best chance of resolving her discomfort and symptoms. Poor Pepsi. Flea bites can be miserable and even once you get rid of the fleas, the body is still having an allergic reaction to the bites. You may need to use oral medication to decrease the itching. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. You may be able to use something over the counter like Benadryl (https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/) or you may need a presciption medication to get rid of the itching. Another thing to consider is that some dogs will develop a skin infection and will need antbiotics after having fleas, so be sure to have your veterinarian examine Pepsi if the red spots on her skin are not improving. Your dog needs to see a veterinarian for a skin scraping to rule out parasites and then a culture to see if there is an underlying bacterial or skin infection. Place a cone on him to prevent licking and chewing.

If you are noticing the itching is getting worse, I recommend to have her examined again. It's possible the medication is not working, it's possible she is having an allergic reaction, or it's possible she is itching due to something else. Your vet will have a better idea. I hope this helps.

Hello, thank you for your question about Pepper. Based on the photos that you've attached it looks like Kaizer has significant irritation of her eyelids and conjunctiva. There are many possible causes for this such as infection, allergies, parasites, etc. I would recommend having Pepper seen by your veterinarian so that they can examine the area and discuss the need for additional testing. They may recommend an impression smear/swab of the affected area to look at under the microscope. They can discuss additional treatment recommendations based on their findings, such as antibiotics, antihistamines, etc. In the meantime I would recommend continuing to use the e-collar to prevent Pepper for rubbing at her eyes.
