My dog is scooting and has a red butt. Is it allergies or anal glands?

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

It appears from the pictures that hollys rectum is very red! It is possible she is having a recurring anal gland infection and needs oral antibiotics. Also she could be having allergies from the environment or fleas making her itchy. I recommend applying flea prevention and taking her back to a veterinarian. It might be time for a second opinion from a different veterinarian to be a little more aggressive with treatment plan.

It sounds like you have done a good job trying to figure this out. If her anal glands have consistently been found not to be full, then that’s a sign that the supplement is doing its job. My only thoughts are making sure that the food trial is done with a hydrolyzed protein diet such as Ultamino because it will diagnose all types of food allergy that a novel protein food may miss. You may also have a trial of a drug like Cytopoint or Apoquel to see if that stops the itching. An antihistamine may also be useful. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs may help as well with inflammation. I hope this gives you a few more ideas and that one of them works. Best of luck!

Hello. The next step here is to rule out allergies, which would definitely explain all of Bella's behaviors. It is not unusual for dogs to experience peri-rectal irritation & inflammation during an allergic flare-up. Talk to your veterinarian about a trial of one of the terrific antiallergy medications ( Apoquel or Cytopoint ). He may be scooting on his rear due to his anal sacs being full or from intestinal parasites causing itching in the area. I recommend an exam to check and express his anal sacs. They can get full and become itchy and infected if the fluid isn’t emptied. Usually dogs express some of this fluid when they defecate but the opening can become plugged and the fluid builds up and can become infected. Dogs with tapeworms can have tapeworm segments come out the anus and be around the fur by the anal opening. This can cause itching and make the anal opening inflammed. You can give canned pumpkin with wet food and green beans to increase the water and fiber in the diet. That can help with the constipation. I do recommend an exam and have them empty the anal sacs. These skin changes are from licking and probably scooting or rubbing this area on the floor. This can be from Josie's anal sacs being full causing the area to be itchy. Anal sacs are on each side of the anus, they are like scent glands in a skunk. They have a foul smelling fluid in them. Normally when a dog defecates some fluid is discharged. If the sac opening becomes clogged the fluid can build up causing pressure, itchiness and often dogs will scoot on their rears. Sometimes they get infected and the area will become red, painful and puss may rupture through the skin. Having full anal sacs is more common with small dogs like Josie. Your veterinarian can manually express the fluid and give the dog relief. Some dogs need to have their annals expressed every few months.
