Why is my dog scooting her butt and yelping when walking or picked up?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed

My dog has been yipping everyone she walks, is picked up. She cannot jump off the bed by herself right now and will scoot her bottom on the ground. She has gotten a hair cut a couple weeks ago and normally she would be somewhat uncomfortable after her hair cut but it has been a little while. Not sure if it’s her stomach or if it’s her private area. Any suggestions?

It sounds like her anal glands may be bothering her. That is the number one reason for dogs to scoot their butt on the ground. She could also have a pulled muscle in her neck or back. It seems like it is their abdomen because they cry when you pick them up that way but it almost always their neck or back that hurts as it is wrenched when you pick them up.

I suggest you have her to your vet for an exam.
