My dog prefers being outside. Is it safe for her to live outdoors?

If his dog house is clean, and insulated then he should have no problem sleeping outside. Make sure you regularly clean it and wash his bedding to keep parasites at bay and do regular flea prevention.

As long as a dog is safe and secure, has adequate shelter/warmth and appropriate access to food and water there is no reason why they must be indoors or outdoors for any set lengths of times. Space to exercise and play is great for dogs and many are happier outdoors as long as they have a comfortable sleeping area

That depends on where you live. If you have an insulated dog house that stays dry and gives protection from the wind and rain then leaving her outside during the day should be fine. I wouldn’t chain her since if she’s able to move around the yard she can keep herself warm with activity. I would keep her inside during the night so she can eat, drink and sleep somewhere warm and comfortable. As she ages she may need to be inside more since she may have arthritis and other medical issues that would make her more susceptible to getting sick or being painful out in the cold. It is difficult to say without knowing exactly where in Australia you are going or what the conditions of the shed would be. Dangers of this kind are certainly very real in rural areas but in the city they are less common. You may also want to consider the temperature in the shed since parts of Australia can become very hot. This could cause heatstroke in such a small dog.

Because the lower temperatures in the winter now it is recommended to keep them inside for most of the day. After the winter you may proceed with Bella being mostly outside if it not too warm but doing in time increments initially. You may start by just doing it for a few hours to eventually most of the time. Again, provided that it is not too cold or too hot for her to handle as dogs can be sensitive to drastic temperature changes. Good luck!

It sounds like you are doing the best you can to keep Ruby comfortable! Obviously being inside in an air conditioned environment during the heat of the day is ideal, but there are plenty of dogs who spend their time outside. To enrich Ruby’s life you could extend the duration and distance of your daily walks, and spend as much time outside with her as you can-play fetch, groom and pet her, even just sit outside and read a book with her by your side. She may enjoy obedience training as a way to bond with you and exercise her mind. Do you have any friends with dogs of a similar size? You could see about setting up play-dates if the dogs get along well.

You will have to train her to stay with in certain limits. It is best to stay with her at all times while on a leash. The more comfortable she gets, the more she will want to explore. You can teach her to come when called. When you call her, tug on the leash a little to help her catch on then give her a reward or treat when she does. You can continue to enforce this behavior as she gets older. You can keep the leash on her but not hold it to increase the distance to get her to respond. There is never a guarantee she won't run off, but teaching her to come on command can help greatly. As long as the weather is not too cold then she can sleep out side with shelter but I would make sure she is trained and older before letter loose outside
